Newly-formed National Unity Advisory Panel will be as ineffective and irrelevant to issue of national unity as its predecessors of the past 25 years.

The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, yesterday launched with great fanfare a new National Unity Advisory Panel with the Minister for National Unity and Social Development, Datuk Napsiah Omar as Chairman and her Deputy Minister, Datuk Alex Lee, as Vice Chairman. MCA and Gerakan leaders are now competing to announce the principles and strategies they have abandoned under the second Outline Perspective Plan.

There is a strange phenomenon in present Malaysian politics. Normally, when a country is on the eve of a new five or ten-year plan, Government leaders will be announcing the new principles, strategies and goals that the people can look forward to in the next decade or two. The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, is visibly angry with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Development Report 1991 released on Thursday which ranked Malaysia 55th among 88 countries in the Human Freedom Index.
