One – DAP welcomes a new Board for Bank Bumiputera and express full support for its ‘cleaning up’ operation. The DAP welcomes the appointment of a new Board for Bank Bumiputera which should have been done in 1983. As Petronas Adviser and former Prime Minister, Tun Hussein Onn, had said, “there would be a lot of cleaning up to be done“ by the new Board, the new Board directors could be assured of the fullest support by the people and the DAP in the ‘cleaning up’ operation.

Regardless of the outcome of the test case filed by DAP legal adviser , K.C. Cheah, to challenge the legality of the Petronas takeover of Bank Bumiputera, Bank Bumiputera would continue as the major banking institution in the country with government backing, and as such, the need for a new set of Board of Directors to regain public confidence is imperative. DAP calls for a national moratorium of actions and statements on the Bukit China issue to remove it as source of division in 1985.

Yesterday’s local press carried with great prominence the ‘final warning’ of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, that action would be taken against those whom he described as creating ‘racial issues’, and he mentioned as examples, the Bukit China, Papan radioactive waste dump, Penang ColIege-General and the MCA crisis. The DAP congratulates Datuk Joseph Pairin Kitingan for his Tambunan by-election victory in Sabah on Saturday, when he polled 3,685 votes defeating the Berjaya candidate, Roger Ongkili, who polled a miserable 637 votes.

Datuk Harris Salleh, the Berjaya Sabah Chief Minister, should take heed of the warning of the people of Sabah in the by-election that his policies are unacceptable to the people of Sabah, and that high-handed actions and pressure could only intimidate and silence the people for a time, but not forever. It has been reported today that beginning with the new school year on 1.1.1985, the 3M Chinese primary school curriculum would reduce Chinese language period from the previous 240 minuts in eight periods per week to 210 minutes in seven periods per week, to enable the increase of Bahasa Malaysia periods from 240 minutes to 270 minutes per week.
