DAP calls on Malacca Chief Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Thamby Cik, to announce on Tuesday’s Malacca State Assembly the withdrawal of any government forcible plan to develop Bukit China

All eyes are now on the forthcoming Malacca State Assembly meeting which begins on Tuesday, Nov.30, 1984, as Malaysians want to know whether the Malacca State Government is prepared to heed and respect the wishes of the people against any forcible government development of Bukit China which deprives Cheng Hoon Teng Temple and the Chinese community their traditional ownership right over the ancient cemetry hill. Challenge to Tan Koon Swan to explain why he wants to manufacture a justification for the Malacca Chief Minister to reject the 300,000 Save Bukit China mass signature and the 553 organisations who have sent memorandum to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple.

Tan Koon Swan has indicated to the press in Malacca yesterday that he would be making an important pronouncement on Bukit China which among other things, would include another development plan for Bukit China. The Bukit China issue will symbolise whether the Malaysian Chinese are equal citizens, with their religions and culture fully respected, as provided for in the Malaysian Constitution

Statement by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary- General and MP for Kota Melaka, Lim Kit Siang, at the handing-over ceremony of 300,000 Save Bukit China mass signatures to the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple Trustees held at Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, Malacca on Saturday, Nov.3 1984 at 11 a.m.

The Bukit China issue will symbolise whether the Malaysian Chinese are equal citizens, with their religions and culture fully respected, as provided for in the Malaysian Constitution.

The 300,000 Save Bukit China mass signature campaign creates history, not only in terms of the number of signatures, but also the support from all races, religions and cultures. There are two signatures books where over 400 lawyers, from all races, religions, cultures, signed to express their support for the Save Bukit China campaign. The whole world must be shocked by the assassination of Indira Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Although she had been a controversial Indian Prime Minister, and the storming of the holiest Sikh shrine, the Golden Temple of Amritsar in June, had been regarded as an act of sacrilege by Sikhs, her assassination is totally reprehensible and must be condemned by all right-minded people in the world.
