Malacca Chief Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Thamby Cik, should not make Cheng Hoon Teng trustees as the ‘scape-goats’ for the Bukit China issue, but admit it is because of his indifference to the historic, religious and cultural sensitivities of the people, in particular the Malaysian Chinese

A few hours ago, a friend who had just flown in from Singapore told me that the Malacca Chief Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Thamby Cik, had told the latest issue of the Far Eastern Economic Review that the Bukit China issue and controversy was the result mainly of the ‘about-face’ of the Cheng Hoon Teng trustees. The Malaysian Chinese community should unite to plan for the development, not for the commercial purpose of turning it into a housing and commercial centre, but into a tourist, religious, historic and cultural centre after the Malacca State Government had abandoned its plan to forcibly level and develop it

The Malaysian Chinese community should unite to plan for the development, not for the commercial purpose of turning it into a housing and commercial centre, but into a tourist, religious, historic and cultural centre after the Malacca State Government had abandoned its plan to forcibly level and develop it

Yesterday’s inauguration of the weekly Save Bukit China ‘Walk or Jog at Bukit China’ every Friday at 5.30 p.m. and its completion without any police interference is a victory for the principle that the Police have no right to obstruct Malaysian from walking or jogging at Bukit China. On August 20, 1984, I wrote to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr, Mahathir Mohamed, asking for firm disciplinary to be taken against Datuk Harris Salleh, Sabah Chief Minister, for violating Article 6(5) of the Sabah State Constitution. This clause prohibits the Sabah Chief Minister from activity engaging in commercial enterprise, but Datuk Harris Salleh was director of at least three companies during his tenure as Sabah Chief Minister.
