The DAP National Save Bukit China Committee will launch a nation-wide campaign to mobilise national opposition to any Government plan to level and develop Bukit China if the Chief Minister announces it on July 23

DAP calls on Malacca State Government to withdraw its letter to Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, rescind its decision to level and develop Bukit China, cancel the $2 million quit rent demand to allow the Chinese community to decide the fate of Bukit China without coercion or duress.

On October 5, 1983, the Malacca State Government wrote to the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, the trustees of the largest Chinese cemetery outside China – Bukit China – stating its intention to develop the 104 acre burial ground into a housing and business area, and to remove and relocate the 12,500 graves on the hill. One important element in determining government credibility and legitimacy, as well as deciding the degree of public confidence in the government, is it fairness and impartiality in the carrying out of its obligations and responsibilities. A government which acts arbitrarily and capriciously for the interests of its leaders or political parties or uses its power to victimize opponents or critics would forfeit public confidence and undermine its own legitimacy and credibility. In the whole Bukit China affair, ever since the State Government communicated to the Chang Hoon Teng Temple, the Bukit China trustees, of its intention to level and develop Bukit China last October, the confirmation of by the Chief Minister, Datuk Abdul Rahim Thamby Cik, in the State Assembly in April of the Government’s plan to level and develop Bukit China, the reiteration by the Chief Minister last month to proceed with its plan as originally intended for Bukit China, the two MCA EXCO Members, Datuk Tee Cheng York and Datuk Lim Soo Kiang have been strangely and unusually quiet about the Bukit China issue.
