Call on Dr. Mahathir Mohamed to respect the views of the people of Papan and reconsider the radioactive waste dumping ground project

The announcement by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, that the government would go ahead with the construction of the radioactive waste dumping ground in Papan, Perak, is most shocking, especially as the people of Papan and the surrounding regions have made clear their opposition to the project on the grounds of health and welfare of the people in the region, as well as for future generations. The handing of the ‘Jawi compulsory subject’ issue seems to confirm a pattern of the modus operandi of the Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Tan Tiong Hong, which is to use denial as a delaying tactic to evade his responsibility over educational issues at least until he had left the Education Ministry when he would have no more responsibility. DAP welcomes Dr. Mahathir’s assurance of impartial investigation and firm action over the gruesome killing of four Cheroh residents.

I welcome the assurance which the Prime Minister, and Defence Minister, Datuk Mahathir Mohamed, has given me to reply my cable to him on the gruesome killing of four Cheroh new village residents at an estate fish pond near Sungai Mas on 23rd May 1984, which had shocked and agitated the people in the entire Raub and surrounding districts. On 26th Feb.1984, when opening the Penang DAP State Seminar on Malaysian Culture, I stated for the first time that there was proposal, in conformity with the ‘One Language, One Culture’ policy proclaimed after the Barisan Nasional’s April 1982 general elections victory, to make Jawi a compulsory subject for all pupils, including Chinese and Tamil primary schools.
