Asia-Pacific Socialist Organisation Conference in Sydney

The DAP will attend the Second Asia-Pacific Socialist Organisation Conference to be held in Sydney on Fed. 6 – 8, 1981. The DAP will be represented by DAP Deputy Secretary-General, Sdr. Lee Lam Thye, and National Organising Secretary,Sdr. P. Patto.

The main themes for the Conference will be:

• Relations Between the Developed and Developing Nation in the Region;

The DAP’s narrow defeat in the Pengkalan Kota by-election, and the events preceding and following the by-election, should be a costly lesson to the DAP, particularly in Penang, of the harm we can inflict on ourselves when we allow our internal difference and problems to run riot, in utter disregard of Party interests. Early this year, the Barisan Nasional Governement will present the Fourth Malaysia Plan to Parliament for adoption. At this mid-term period of the 20-Year Perspective Plan of the New Economic Policy, there has been many deviation from the New Economic Policy which has undermind national unity and inter-racial harmony in the country.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, and the other UNMO leaders had claimed that the NEP objective to help raise the economic standard of the bumiputras is not a policy to ’rob Peter to pay Paul’. The chief Minister said that the Malacca Barisan National move to declare my Kubu seat vacant is based on law and not personal.
He said that the Kubu seat could be declared vacant because I had been absent without permission from the Speaker for six months. The finance Minister, Tengku Razaleigh, in his 1981 Budget, prides himself for presenting a ‘smallman’s budget’

Kit Siang calls on Malaysian authorities to mend fences with Malaysian students in New Zealand

Parliamentary Opposition Leaders and DAP Secretary General, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, has called on the Malaysia High Commission and the Malaysia authorities to mend fence with Malaysia students in New Zealand and to re-establish a relationship of trust and confidence with Malaysian students there.

Mr. Lim said he was surprised to find that the Malaysian High Commission had been banned by the Students’ Union both of the Victoria University of Wellington and the Auckland University. The relationship between the Malaysia High Commission and the Malaysia Student unions with effective representation of the majority of Malaysian students in the various New Zealand universities were also very strained if not ruptured.
