For three months, the thrice – weekly publication, Berita Awam, which is controlled by the Tan Koon Swan MCA faction, had been carrying out a vicious and irresponsible campaign of vilification against me because of mt Bukit China stand. The call by the Chairman of the Bumiputra Malaysia Finance loans scandal inquiry committee, Tan Sri Ahmad Nordin, for a Royal Commission of Inquiry nine months after his appointment and the submission of the interim report of the committee is clearly a plaintive cry of frustration, helplessness and even futility in trying to get to the bottom of the BMF loans scandal. Bank Bumiputra is the only bank in the world could claim to be ‘sound and strong’ after losing $969 million

The long-delayed annual report of Bank Bumiputra has at last been released, showing that for 1983, it faces a pre-tex loss of $969 million. But what I find even more shocking is that the Bank Bumiputra Chairman, Dr. Nawawi Mat Awin, could claim in his annual statement that the bank was now sound and strong, as if he is no more responsible for the BMF loans scandal which caused the people to lose over $2.5 billion. The DAP will officially launch the Defend Sabah State Constitution campaign at the Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday, Sept. 3 after I had repeated my parliamentary speech on the Report of the Committee of Privileges on Fung Ket Wing-Harris Salleh on the Labuan land ownership the speech which I was challenged by Datuk Harris Salleh to repeat in Sandakan Dewan Masyarakat at 10 a.m. this morning but who, in the last minute, chickened out by banning me from entry into Sabah via Kota Kinabalu.
