DAP ‘Do-or-Die’ Three Year Plan for 1986

The DAP Central Executive Committee, as well as the DAP Summit Meeting of National and State Leader, at Cameron Highlands from Step. 9-11, took the historic decision to embark on a ‘Do-or-Die’ Three Year Plan to fight the next general elections expected to be held in 1986.

In April 1982, the people of Malaysia missed a golden opportunity to force the Mahathir administration to conduct a painful reappraisal of its nation building policies by causing electoral setbacks for the Barisan Nasional in the general elections. The power of the Raub Declaration has achieved its first result: the withdrawal of the Bandaraya requirement that Bahasa Malaysia on signboards and advertisements must be at least double the size of Chinese and other letterings.

After the MCA’s April 1982 General Elections ‘breakthrough’ and ‘great victory’, Malaysian Chinese found that their constitutional rights and interests came under sustained attack on a whole variety of directions. The MCA, despite its great and unprecedented general elections victory at the expense of the DAP, was not only unable to regain the rights lost from 1957 to 1982, instead since April 1982, even more rights and interests of the Malaysian Chinese faced erosion. A few days ago, the local press reported that the Elections Commission had complete its work to redelineate the parliamentary and state assembly constituencies, and that the Elections Commission is expected to present its proposals on the new redelineation of electoral constituencies in the coming meeting of Parliament from July 25 to August 5. For parliamentary democracy to work, one of the vital perequisites is that there should be an independent Elections Commission to be responsible for the conduct of elections, whether in delimitation of electoral constituencies, or the registration of voters or the holding of elections itself. I am shocked by the Taman Aman parkland scandal where one and a half acres of parkland was subdivided and awarded to six ‘big shots’, namely the Selangor State Secretary’s wife, Datin Zaiton Ahmad, the State Legal Adviser, Datuk Abdul Malek Mohamed Salleh, the Director of the Selangor Public Works Department, Mr. P. Srinivasan, the Deputy Registrar of Titles, Encik Zainal Abidin Nordin, the former secretary to the State Assembly, Encik Muslim Haji Adnan and the former private secretary to Datuk Hormat, Puan Isha Bee Hussein, for their individual gain.
