Ingredients for the success of a political movement

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a meeting of the Setapak DAP Branch at Circular Road, Kuala Lumpur on Friday, 10th March 1972 at 7.30 p.m.

Ingredients for the success of a political movement

If a political movement is to make a lasting political impact and contribution, it must be an ideological political movement with a collective leadership. The DAP is such a political party. It is unlike, for instance, the Gerakan Ra’ayat Malaysia which was a political party of personalities, and when the personalities defect, quarrel and break up, the Gerakan Ra’ayat Malaysia lies in ruins and shambles. Campaign to instill courtesy in government servants when dealing with the public

Adjournment Speech by DAP Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Dewan Ra’ayat on 13th December 1971

Campaign to instill courtesy in government servants when dealing with the public

My fellow parliamentarians in the DAP and I, in the course of our meeting with the public, have received recurrent complaints from members of the public, particularly from the laboring class and the illiterate, that government employees had been very rude and discourteous when dealing with them.

We read in the press from the letters to the editor’s column, of similar complaints. These incidents happen to the educated. We can well imagine what treatment the illiterate, the old women, and the laboring class receive at the hand of the rude and discourteous government servants. Lowering of Voting Age from 21 to 18

Adjournment speech by DAP Member of Parliament, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Ra’ayat on 10th December, 1971

Lowering of Voting Age from 21 to 18

Early this year, Parliament passed a law, ‘The Age of Majority Act’, reducing the legal Age from 21 to 18 years. If young men or girls of 18 years are to treated for serious civil purposes as mature people and be able to own property, to enter into contractual obligations and rights, then the case is strengthened that they should have the vote as well. People ought to have the right to vote and to have a say about the way in which their lives are governed and in which the country is being run – at the age at which society expects them to assume adult social responsibilities. When there is war or national emergency the young men of 18 are conscripted to service and many serve without conscription. It is clearly a strong argument that if you can expect a young man of 18 to die in the defence of the country, then he should be given the right to help decide in the shaping of the country for which he is being asked to die.
