I am more than satisfied with the DAP results in the Kenering State Assembly by-election, for the DAP has achieved what we had set out to do in contesting the Kenering State Assembly by-election.

Parliamentary Opposition Leader, Lim Kit Siang, congratulates Kenering DAP candidate, Tbrahim bin Singgeh, and Perak Chairman, Sdr. Lim Cho Hock, for the ‘more than satisfactory’ results in the Kenering by-election.

I am more than satisfied with the DAP results in the Kenering State Assembly by-election, for the DAP has achieved what we had set out to do in contesting the Kenering State Assembly by-election.

Firstly, we had slashed the Barisan Nasional majority by over 2,000 votes. In the 1974 general elections, which was a direct contest between Tan Sri Ghazalie Jawi of Barisan Nasional and Sik Sdri. Zaharah binti Ibrahim of DAP, Tan Sri Ghazalie Jawi won by a majority of 5,218 votes. This has now been slashed to 3,195 votes. If the Pekemas candidate, which was supported by the PSRM and KITA, had not interfered, this majority would have been reduced even further. Statement by parliamentary Opposition Leader and DAP Secretary-General, Lim Kit Siang, at a Press Conference held at 63-D Jalan Sultan, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday, 2nd Nov. 1977 at 12 noon, on the occasion of the first full year of the detention of Sdr. Chian Heng Kai and Sdr. Chan Kok Kit, and the publication of a Book on their Detention.

DAP calls on Prime Mimister, Dato Hussein Onn, to release immediately and unconditionally Sdr. Chian Heng Kai and Sdr. Chan Kok Kit, who are Malaysian patriots and defenders of the Malaysian Constitution and the democratic system.

Call on Malaysian Government to make an unequivocal commitment to human rights by ratification of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966 which was adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations by 106 votes to none on December 16, 1966

On 16 December 1966, the United General Assembly, by 106 votes to none, adopted the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights 1966 under which, each State Party undertakes to respect and to ensure to all individuals within its territory and subject to its jurisdiction the rights recognized in the Covenant without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion’, popolitical or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. In the 1974 general elections, the DAP secured a total of some 400,000 votes, which represents 34.1% of the total votes cast in Parliamentary constituencies contested by the DAP and 31.6% of the total votes cast in State Assembly constituencies contested by the DAP. I have with me the DAP National Treasurer and DAP State Assemblyman for Kluang, Sdr. Lee Kaw. I have called this Press Conference to take up on behalf of 180 smallholders in what was formerly Central Paloh Estate, Kluang, their long-standing grievance involving some $600,000 of replanting cess which should have been paid to them, but not done so. Selangor/Federal Territory Elections Preparatory Committee given one month to show results

I had suggested the holding of a meeting of the Selangor/Federal Territory Elections Preparatory Committee tonight at 7.30 p.m. partly to express my dissatisfaction with the work this Committee had done since its formation in August.

Until 8 p.m., only five out of 11 members had turned up. The Chairman had also not yet turned up. I left because I had no time to waste waiting for the meeting to begin. Continue reading From the SG’s Desk

November 2 – One Full Year of Detention of Sdr. Chian Heng Kai and Sdr. Chan Kok Kit

In three weeks time, our comrades Sdr. Chain Heng Kai and Sdr. Chan Kok Kit would have served their full year of detention without trial, matyrs to the cause of the DAP and the people of Malaysia.

The award of the Nobel Peace Prize 1977 to Amnesty International should give us all an added boost to our determination to continue to fight for human rights for Malaysian citizens. Continue reading From the SG’s Desk
