DAP has decided to re-join the Chinese Organisations/Political Parties Joint Action Committee. This was decided by DAP Central Working Committee, after considering the various calls by representatives of Chinese organisations, political parties and the public. A few days ago, Education Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, announced the revival of the spirit of the previous National Language Month campaign, with the launching of the “Love Our Language Campaign” on December by the Prime Minister, DATUK Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed. He said the objective of the “Love Our Language Campaign” is to promote Bahasa Malaysia as the language of communication and national unity in Malaysia. Two days ago, the Selangor DAP, led by Selangor State Chairman and MP for Petaling Jaya, Dr. Eng Seng Chai and Selangor State Vice Chairman, and MP for Puchong, Dr.V.David, were to hold a hunger strike outside the University of Malaya campus to protest against the University of Malaya Senate decision abolishing Chinese and Tamil languages as medium of instruction for elective course. In March 1987, the party formed a 1990s Movement National Task Force to prepare both the people and the party for the political challenge of the 1990s. If the DAP is going to be more effective in bringing about the political changes we desire in the country, then it is imperative that we inculeate among the people, as well as among party members, a long-term political perspective. DAP will definitely be contesting in the Gopeng parliamentary by-election

I confirm that I met MCA President, Datuk Dr. Ling Liong Sik, yesterday in Kuala Lumpur for 1½ hours. I must stress that this is a ‘private’ rather than a ‘secret’ meeting.

Both of us agreed that the discussions will remain ‘private’ to both parties, and as such I have nothing to say about our discussions, except that they dealt with the national political problems, and in particular the ten areas which I had referred to in Ipoh last Saturday, relating to the dilemma faced by the Malaysian Chinese thirty years after Merdeka. We are entering the fourth month after the August 3 general elections which returned the Barisan Nasional, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, admitted at the September UMNO General Assembly that he called early general elections to end the crisis of confidence undermining economic recovery, the Barisan Nasional’s fourth-fifth parliamentary victory had not ended, but compounded the crisis of confidence in the country. The 1986 batch of 24 DAP MPs and 37 Assemblymen must take history in DAP and national history not only for winning the most number of Opposition parliamentary and state assembly seats in Malaysian elections, but in paving the way for an event greater victory in the next general elections in 1990.
