DAP warns of growing labour unrest in Malaysia unless anti-labour laws are repealed and workers in Malaysia given a New Deal

There has been growing labour unrest throughout the country in recent months. This is evidence of the mounting discontent and unrest of the workers against the anti-labour laws in the country which deny them the right to democratically and peacefully fight for the betterment of labour interests in Malaysia.

Under the Alliance Government, legislation after legislation has been passed to further curb and control the workers and undermine their unity and solidarity, so that Malaysia will have a vast pool of cheap and docile workers to attract foreign and local capitalists. Sales Tax in Force

Sales Tax in Force

Without doubt, the Opposition’s ferocious attack on the 5% Sales Tax in Parliament, the people’s general condemnation of it in the country, and the DAP’s warning in Parliament during the debate on the Sales Tax Bill that the DAP would continue to oppose the 5% Sales Tax inside and outside Parliament until it is repealed, has had its effect on the Finance Minister, Tun Tan Siew Sin.

This is why the Finance Minister has now broadened the scope of the exempted items from the Sales Tax, as compared to his original intention as expressed in his Budget speech on 6th January to only exempt basic necessities and raw materials essential for key manufacturing industries. Just and sympathetic solution of the hawker problem in Kuala Lumpur

Adjournment Speech by DAP Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Ra’ayat on Tuesday, 18th January 1972

Just and sympathetic solution of the hawker problem in Kuala Lumpur

For the last three years, the hawkers and petty traders in the Kuala Lumpur Municipality have been harassed and hounded by the Municipal authorities, in particular the green-uniformed Enforcement Squad.

Recently, these anti-hawker activities were intensified, presumably because of the forthcoming PATA Conference, so that the PATA delegates will get the impression that in Kuala Lumpur everyone is well-to-do and gainful employed. The 1972 Budget: sales tax and gaming tax

The 1972 Budget is the most painful budget for many years. It is also in the true tradition of our Finance Minister’s past budgets – for its bias in favour of the haves and the rich, and the burdens he imposes on have-nots and the labouring class.

The 1972 budget will be particularly painful for the poor, and comparatively painless for the rich. In fact, the Finance Minister went out of his way in his budget speech to assure the rich and the wealthy that there will be no income tax changes to get the rich to make a greater contribution to national revenue. He is particularly tender to his own kind. Continue reading The 1972 Budget: sales tax and gaming tax

1972 Budget – a black day for the poor

Today is a black day for poor Malaysians of all races. It is the most painful budget for many years. What is to be noted is that it is particularly painful for the poor, and comparatively painless for the rich. In fact, the Finance Minister, Tun Tan Siew Sin, went out of this way to assure the rich that there will be no income tax changes to get to rich to make a greater contribution to national revenue. Sir,

My attention has just been drawn to your report on 21.12.1971 on “DAP criticism of MTUC to split image of unions” where MTUC President, Mr. Yeoh Teck Chye, was purported to have replied to me at a National Union of Banking Employees forum where I analysed the three causes of the weakness of trade union movement in Malaysia: namely, an anti-labour government with its host of anti-labour legislation; an ineffective trade union leadership; and the multiplicity of peanut trade unions. The Role of Workers in the Second Malaysia Plan

Speech by DAP Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a forum organized by the Kuala Lumpur Branch of the National Union of Bank Employees held at NUBE Headquarters at Jalan Ampang on Wednesday, 15th December 1971 at 7.30 p.m.

The Role of Workers in the Second Malaysia Plan

Before we discuss the role of workers in the Second Malaysia Plan, we should first find out what is the government’s attitude as to the role of workers in the Second Malaysia Plan.

It is always wise to judge a person or government by his action rather than by his words. Continue reading The Role of Workers in the Second Malaysia Plan

DAP sends Memorandum to Tun Razak to set up special government department or agency to promote economic growth and development of new villages

DAP call for establishment of special government department to promote economic growth and development of new villages in Malaysia

For the last one year, inside and outside Parliament, over the press, radio and television, Malaysians were subject to ceaseless publicity and propaganda about the Second Malaysia Five Year Plan, how it would change the economy of the country, abolish poverty, create jobs and give a new hope and life to the poor and downtrodden in the country.

However, to one great group of Malaysians, all these publicity and propaganda do not make much of an impression or impact. Continue reading DAP call for establishment of special government department

DAP calls for New Economic Policy for New Villages

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally at Kampar on Saturday, 4th September 1971 at 8pm

DAP calls for New Economic Policy for New Villages

In Ipoh two days ago, the Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, disclosed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands has formed a new unit to assist new villages to obtain titles to the land they occupy. He also instructed district officers to help new villagers in this regard. The DAP welcomes this, for we had pressed for title to new villagers from the very formation of the DAP.

But this is a step which has been long overdue for two decades. When the people were resettled into new village 20 years ago, they should have been given title to the land they occupy, just as FELDO settles are given title to the land they occupy.
