Swift and decisive action by the Prime Minister to resolve the University of Malaya Senate controversy over elective courses and other issues is the only way to avoid deterioration of race relations

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Kasitah Gaddam, yesterday called for a halt to the raising of “sensitive issues” in public to allow Malaysians to get on with the job of economic recovery. Racial polarization in the University of Malaya campus has spiralled to a very serious proportion, and must be a cause of great concern to all Malaysians as well as the government. DAP proposes the convening of a National Chinese Education Congress to adopt a Chinese Education 20-Year Plan which is subsequently ratifies by all Chinese organizations and individuals to embody the objectives of the Chinese community in Malaysia.

Speech by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary-General and MP for Tanjung, Lim Kit Siang, at the dialogue between leaders of DAP and the 15 Chinese National Organisations on Chinese education at Chinese Assembly Hall, Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, 20th August 1987 at 2.30 p.m.

DAP proposes the convening of a National Chinese Education Congress to adopt a Chinese Education 20-Year Plan which is subsequently ratifies by all Chinese organizations and individuals to embody the objectives of the Chinese community in Malaysia.

In the past few months, the Malaysian Chinese community has been greatly upset and agitated by the government’s decision to revise the Education Act, 1961. The Chinese community fears that this will be another serious threat to the rightful place of mother-tongue education in Malaysia, and the government must be aware and understand these fears of the Chinese community. Australian Government should inform Malaysian Government before taking any action deport Malaysian student

The DAP is very concerned by the latest press reports that the Australian Education Department has confirmed that 171 foreign under-graduates, mostly Malaysians, face deportion if they do not settle the increased Overseas Students’ Change fee soon.

The reported increase in Australian university fees has created a great burden and hardship on Malaysian students pursuing higher studies in Australia. It is the responsibility of the Malaysian Government to help Malaysian students in Australia, to ensure that no one is deported purely because of financial problems created by the repeated increases of Overseas Students’ charge fees. We are seeing more and ore instances of Ministers, and even Deputy Ministers of the same Ministry, contradicting each other. There seems of late to be a shocking lack of leadership, unity of purpose and even discipline in the Cabinet. DAP to hold protest demonstrations in four toll gates at Federal Territory, Sungei Besi Plaza (Selangor), Seremban and Ayer Keroh (Malacca) simultaneously on Thursday at 8.30 a.m. and calls on motorists and highway users to express support by sounding the horms to protest against 100% toll rate increase

The DAP will hold protest demonstration at four toll gates at Kepong Interchange (KL), Sungei Besi toll plaza (Selangor) Seremban and Ayer Keroh (Malacca) simultaneously at 8.30 a.. on Thursday, 13.8.1987 to protest against the arbitrary and unjustifiable 100% increase in the highway toll rates. I call on all motorists and other highway users to give support to this protest demonstration by sounding their horn when approaching the toll plaza, when paying their toll and when leaving the toll plaza.
