During the September 1986 UMNO General Assembly, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, made disparaging remarks about my getting a $1,000 monthly pension from Malacca, being former Malacca Assemblymen, alleging that I also get another fictitious pension from Selangor, and hoping to get a third pension from Penang. The Education Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, was forced to admit in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday that the Curriculum Development Centre had forwarded a proposal to drop Chinese and Tamil as SRP examination subjects after 1988 in the new secondary school curriculum. Yesterday, I sent a cable to Australian Prime Minister, Bob Hawke, urging him to intervene to rescind the deportation order issued against Malaysian student from Kuala Lumpur, Chin Jee Shoong, so that he could complete his university studies. It is clear that both the Education Minister, Anwar Ibrahim and the Deputy Education Minister, Ng Cheng Kiat, have failed to satisfy the students, parents and the Malaysian public about the injustices and discrimination arising from the new batch of university student intake this year. Early this month, there was the farce of the MCA offering the Deputy Education Ministership to the Deputy Chairman of the United Chinese Teachers’ Association (UCTA), Dr. Tuang Pik King. MCA Deputy Education Minister, Senator Ng Cheng Kiat, publicly offered the Deputy Education Minister’s post to Dr. Tuang if the latter would be an associate member of the MCA and stand as a MCA candidate in the coming general elections, and that should Dr. Tuang loses in the general elections, he would be appointed as a Senator. UMNO Youth Leader and Education Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, has only himself to blame for being the centre of nation-wide criticism and attacks by the Chinese community for the second time. The first time was when he warned the non-Malays not to question the government’s national policies or he would raise the citizenship issue of the non-Malays. The second was his comments on Section 21(2) of the 1961 Education Act.
