In the Ungku Omar memorial lecture on ‘Education and development’ at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) last weekend, the University of Malaya Vice Chancellor Royal Prof. Ungku Aziz said an increase in the number of universities in the country will lead to a decline in academic standards, and advocated that it was better to have a few universities which emphasized on quality in education. The reduction of the 3M Chinese language period time a change in character of Chinese primary schools

It has been reported today that beginning with the new school year on 1.1.1985, the 3M Chinese primary school curriculum would reduce Chinese language period from the previous 240 minuts in eight periods per week to 210 minutes in seven periods per week, to enable the increase of Bahasa Malaysia periods from 240 minutes to 270 minutes per week. Use of Mother-Tongue Language in School Functions

This is the first time I am moving a $10-cut motion, which is in fact a censure motion, on the Ministry of Education estimates, and this time specifically against the Federal Territory Education Director, Datuk Mohamed Hussein Ahmad, whose action had aggravated racial polarisation in schools by trampling on the constitutional rights and linguistic sensitivities of the Chinese and Indians in Malaysia.

On October 10, the Federal Territory Education Director issued a circular to all schools, including national-type Chinese and Tamil schools, requiring them to conduct school functions, such as weekly school assembly, speech day and sports day, in Bahasa Malaysia only.
