It will be no exaggeration to say that all these years since Merdeka, when Pahang was governed under virtual political monopoly of the Barisan Nasional government, many areas were neglected and forgotten. DAP calls for the immediate restoration of allocations for Pupil’s Own Language as a mark of government commitment to fully respect the constitutional right of mother-tongue learning and teaching.

DAP calls for the immediate restoration of allocations for Pupil’s Own Language as a mark of government commitment to fully respect the constitutional right of mother-tongue learning and teaching.

The Pupil’s Own Language programme in the schools is a scandal and disgrace, especially after the arbitrary and deplorable decision to cut the original allocation of $18 million for POL by $13 million, resulting in the reduction of the allowances of college-trained teachers from $20 to $5 an hour, and of graduate teachers from $25 to $8 an hour. Advice to Dr. Koh Tsu Koon to stop playing a destructive role in Parliament in blocking or sabotaging the DAP’s Parliamentary efforts in the cause of Chinese education.

Last Tuesday, the nine DAP MPs jointly condemned the Gerakan MP for Tanjong, Dr. Koh Tsu Koon, for his leading role in Parliament’s first day of sitting on 14th March 1983 in killing the DAP motion on Chinese education and Chinese primary schools to ensure that Chinese primary schools would never fear conversion by repealing Clause 21(2) of the 1961 Education Act. The government has introduced the 1982 Universities and University Colleges Amendment Bill to pave the way for the establishment of the Islamic University by providing for the exclusion from the operation of the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 any higher educational institution with the status of a university established under any treaty, agreement or convention between Malaysia and any other country or any international organisation. Every year, there is bad news for Malaysian students who aspire for higher education opportunities. Last month, it was announced that Australian education opportunities. Last month, it was announced that overseas students beginning next year. The quota system which so far limits entry into the medical courses in the Australian universities will be extended to cover other courses.

With a very restrictive policy governing entry into the five local universities, the unrelenting diminution of higher education places overseas at ever higher and exorbitant costs is making higher education one of the most frustrating and exasperating experiences both for the students and their parents.
