I commend PAS for its call on the Pardons Board to reconsider the Sim Kie Chon appeal and to commute Sim’s death sentence to life imprisonment based on principles of justice and humanity. In my 19 years of political involvement, I had not until recently sued newspapers for defamation. This is not because I had not been a target of character—assassination, but because as a former journalist myself, I am very reluctant to institute legal proceedings against newspapers. Call on Anwar Ibrahim and other UMNO leaders to stand up for justice and equality by securing a pardon for Sim Kie Chon.

I have cabled to all UMNO Ministers to urge them to bring up the question of Sim Kie Chon’s commutation on Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting. I would call on all UMNO Ministers, in particular the UMNO Youth Leader and Minister for Agriculture, Anwar Ibrahim, who before and after entering politics had emphasised that he was dedicated to justice and equality, to stand up for these ideals by securing a pardon for Sim Kie Chon. DAP launches Save Sim Kie Chon Campaign, headed by Sdr. Lee Lam Thye, with first activity a nation-wide signature campaign

The DAP has decide to launch a nation-wide Save Sim Kie Chon Campaign, as we believe that it will be manifestly unfair and unjust for Sim Kie Chon to be executed in violation of Article 8 of the Malaysian Constitution which guarantees equality of persons before the law. If ex-Cabinet Minister, Mochtar Hashim, who was convicted of a more serious offence than Sim Kie Chon as he had discharged a firearm and killed the Negeri Sembilan State Assembly Speaker, Datuk Taha, could have his death penalty commuted to life imprisonment, why shouldn’t Sim Kie Chon be spared his life when his offence is very much lighter? The DAP welcomes the establishment of a Parliamentary Select Committee on the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Bill 1984, for we hope that it marks the beginning of a new government attitude which accepts the principle that legislation is not the sole prerogative of the government of the day, but must involve the widest public participation in the deliberation and formulation stage even before they are debated in Parliament.

We hope that the Government would not set up select Committees merely for X-films, divorce laws, and now drug legislation, but also on Bills with wide-ranging constitutional, economic, human rights and political implications, like constitutional amendments, the recent Civil Law Amendment Bill, even the Companies Amendment Bill, so that Parliament will not merely operate as a rubber stamp of the Executive, but participates actively in law-making. When the 2M leadership came into power in July 1981, they promised Malaysians a liberal, open and democratic government and society. In the last 32 months of office of the 2M government, the promise of an open, liberal and democratic government has not been fulfilled.
