Import duties on Mandarin oranges

Press Statement by Ketua Pembangkang & Secretary-General, Mr. Lim Kit Siang on 28.12.1973

Call for lifting of import duties on Mandarin oranges to enable poor and low-income Malaysian Chinese to celebrate Chinese New Year

The MCA is holding a special conference for all its branch officials in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow to discuss the issues and problems facing the people of Malaysia, in particular the Malaysian Chinese.

What is needed is not more discussion, but resolution and action to help the ordinary people in the country to lead a better and more fulfilling life.

There are so many things which should be done immediately, and which can be done immediately, both by MCA Ministers and other Alliance Ministers. The only question is whether these Ministers have the will, ability and determination to do what is right by the people.

For instance, the Finance Minister, Tun Tan Siew Sin, can immediately do the following things: Continue reading Import duties on Mandarin oranges

Call on the people of Kajang to vote against Tun Tan Siew Sin and his policies on Nov. 3

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally during the Kajang by-election at Kajang town on Thursday, Nov. 1, 1973

Call on the people of Kajang to vote against Tun Tan Siew Sin and his policies on Nov. 3

The MCA President, Tun Tan Siew Sin, said in Ipoh yesterday that the Chinese themselves were to blame for their troubles because of their political indifference.

He does not blame himself or his MCA colleagues for their substantial contribution in the last 20 years for the present troubles faced by the Chinese.

After all, it is the MCA Ministers in Cabinet and MCA MPs in Parliament who supported and enacted a whole series of laws which have emasculated the political, economics, educational and cultural rights of the Malaysian Chinese and other races in the country.

Who supported the amendment to the Malaysian Constitution in February 1971 to curtail the political rights of the people?

Who supported the legislative provision in January 1972 to abolish the Boards of Managements of Chinese schools? Continue reading Call on the people of Kajang to vote against Tun Tan Siew Sin and his policies on Nov. 3

Malaysia Chinese must exercise their political rights if they are not to be aliens in the land of their birth

Speech by Ketua Pembangkang and DAP Secretary-General, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP seminar organized by the Chinese education sub-committee held at Perak DAP State premises at Jalan Kampar, Ipoh, on Sunday, 7th Oct. 1973 at 10 a.m.

Malaysia Chinese must exercise their political rights if they are not to be aliens in the land of their birth

At a MCA party function on Sept. 18, the Selangor MCA Chairman, Tan Sri Lee Siok Yew, said that “directly and indirectly, the Chinese in Malaysia had received several blows making them feel psychologically that they are second-class citizens.”

There is no better remark that this to sum up the result of twenty years’ of MCA political activity. This explains why the MCA is held in such utter discredit and contempt among the masses.

Only last Sunday, we read in the press of a MCA Senator and new Deputy Minister, in Sitiawan calling on the Malaysian Chinese to unite behind the MCA so that the “Chinese are represented with one voice” inside the government.

This argument, which sounded attractive superficially, is not a new one. In fact, other people, only more recently more in the limelight than him, had made the same calls and have ended up being expelled from the MCA. This Senator’s own promotion to be Deputy Minister is a reward for his defecting from the ranks of his former colleagues, and siding the right group at a critical time. In fact, it would be pertinent to ask this Senator Deputy Minister, how much is ‘Chinese Unity’ worth against a Deputy Ministership. The defection of Lee Beng Cheang

I have not received any letter of resignation from Lee Beng Cheang. In Fact, he seems to have gone into hiding. It is noteworthy that at the MCA press conference yesterday announcing Lee Beng Cheang’s defection to the MCA, Lee Beng Cheang was himself absent.

In a way I feel sorry for Lee Beng Cheang. I believe he was blackmailed and forced into his present action. If I know Lee Beng Cheang, he is the most miserable man in public life today. Continue reading The defection of Lee Beng Cheang
