December 5, 1986 is a day of shame and infamy in the history of democracy and freedom in Malaysia – for on that day, despite widespread and deep-seated public opposition, the Barisan Nasional government used its four-fifth majority in Parliament to ram through the draconian and oppressive Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill. The people of Malaysia lost an important round in the flight for democratic rights yesterday, with the Barisan Nasional using its four-fifth majority in Parliament to ram through the Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill, by a vote of 129 to 23 in the second reading, and a vote of 131 to 21 during the third and final reading. We are entering the fourth month after the August 3 general elections which returned the Barisan Nasional, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, admitted at the September UMNO General Assembly that he called early general elections to end the crisis of confidence undermining economic recovery, the Barisan Nasional’s fourth-fifth parliamentary victory had not ended, but compounded the crisis of confidence in the country. DAP to move an amendment to the Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill to provide that it should be a defence in a prosecution under the Act that the disclosure of official secret was in the public interest

DAP to move an amendment to the Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill to provide that it should be a defence in a prosecution under the Act that the disclosure of official secret was in the public interest.

Part II of the Malaysian Constitution devotes nine Articles to enshrine life and guarantee fundamental human rights in Malaysia, like the right to personal liberty (Article 5), the right to freedom of speech, expression, and association (Article 10) and the right to freedom of religion (Article II).
