Sugar scarcity crisis again!

There sugar crisis has hit various parts of Malaysia again, such as Malacca, Johore, Pahang, Kedah.

I had warned during the January session of Parliament that there will be a recurrence of the sugar scarcity and price increase crisis unless the Ministry of Trade and Industry take energetic action to curb and prevent sugar hoarding, in particular by the sugar manufacturers.

Unfortunately, the Ministry of Trade and Commerce had failed to do this. On the contrary, it has taken a decision which can only aggravate the sugar crisis. Continue reading Sugar scarcity crisis again!

Call on government to disallow any price increase of sugar

The root cause of the present sugar crisis in Malaysia, causing widespread confusion, frustration, hardship and suffering to the poor in the kampongs, new villages and towns, is the hoarding by sugar manufacturers and wholesalers in expectation of price increases in sugar. They hope that they would be able to make a neat fortune from their hoardings when the price goes up.

There is no doubt that a thorough investigation into the origins of the sugar crisis will show up the role of sugar factories in this crisis, which had refused to supply sugar both to wholesalers and retailers for a few days early this month. Rise in price of condensed milk

Hardly a week passes nowadays without the price of some essential commodity or other going up in price. The latest item to increase its price is condensed milk, with every tin going up five cents.

Although every housewife knows that the cost of living has shot up over the past year, and is continuing to shoot up, the government leaders, in particular, the Finance Minister, Tun Tan Siew Sin, had publicly claimed that the cost of living has remained stable in the country over years.
