Sarawak Chief Minister, Tan Sri Haji Abdul Taib Mahmud has said that the Sarawak State Government is prepared to recommend to the Federal Government that the RM15 billion Bakun hydro-electric dam project be cancelled if the residents of Belaga are truly against it. However, he seems to have his perceptions and priority on the Internet all wrong. Yesterday’s press, reporting the announcement by the Minister for Information, Datuk Mohamed Rahmat in Michigan that the Cabinet has set up an Internet Abuses and Censorship Committee is most ironical, for yesterday’s press also reported the first Malay newspaper, Berira Harian, to be made available on-line through the Internet. The Prime Minister’s proposal that the Judiciary and the Bar Council should discuss their grievances to resolve their differences is most timely, as public confidence in the independence and integrity of the Judiciary must be cherished and upheld by all quarters concerned.
