Yesterday, the MCA Secretary-General and Minister for Housing and Local Government, Dr. Ting Chew Peh, repeated the MCA allegation about the oppression and persecution of the Chinese in Kelantan by reiterating that the PAS-led Kelantan State Government had infringed the rights and interests of the Chinese in Kelantan through 62 Islamisation measures. It is precisely because the MCA has no principles that its leaders must do all things ‘steathily’ resulting in the continuous erosion of the rights and interests of the Malaysian Chinese.

This delegation of DAP leaders to Kelantan is pleased to have completed their fact-finding visit to Kelantan. The main purpose of our visit has been to find out the truth of the situation in Kelantan after 15 months of PAS-led state government because the controlled organs of the mass media have ceased to be a reliable source of information. I have this morning sent urgent faxes to the MCA President, Datuk Seri Dr. Ling Liong Sik and the Gerakan President, Datuk Seri Dr. Lim Keng Yaik, asking them to send me five instances that the Chinese in Kelantan had been ‘oppressed’ and ‘persecuted’ because of Islamisation measures which infringe the rights and interests of the non-Muslim Malaysians in the last 15 months. The DAP delegation to Kelantan has visited Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Machang, Kuala Krai, Gua Musang, Pulai, Pasir Puteh and Tumpat yesterday and today, and tonight, we are having a ceramah-dialogue with the people of Kota Bahru and Kelantan to get public feedback as to whether the Islamisation policies and measures of the Kelantan State Government in the past 15 months had ‘oppressed’ and ‘persecuted’ the Chinese and non-Muslims infringing their rights and interests. In the past few months, MCA and Gerakan leaders have accused the DAP, and myself in particular, for being responsible for PAS coming into power in Kelantan by influencing the Chinese voters to vote for PAS in the October 1990 general elections with the call for a two-coalition system and the slogan for ‘CHANGE’.
