Yesterday, at the Malacca DAP ceramah to welcome the entry into the DAP of 27 Chinese educationists and human rights activists, I challenged the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed to declare the government’s stand on the MCA President and Transport Minister, Datuk Dr. Ling Liong Sik, for violating the law that a Minister cannot engage in any private business. Anwar has failed to answer the most important question: whether the Education Act Consultative Council is to deny the voters the right to know the contents of the Bill and to decide whether to endorse or reject them in next general elections.

After the Cabinet meeting yesterday, the Education Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that members of the Consultative Council on the Education Act will not be bound by the Official Secrets Act, but the circulation of the draft Education Bill would be limited and its contents cannot be printed without permissions. Dr. Mahathir was never sincere in wanting to have the NECC as a forum to seek a national consensus for post-1990 national economic policies.

The press today reported the withdrawal of five more mem¬bers from the National Economic Consultative Council (NECC) in protest against the lack of sincerity of the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, in establishing the NECC, which was, most recently illustrated by his speech to the Harvard Club last week.
