MCA and Gerakan should ask for the dismissal of Anwar Ibrahim as Education Minister if he defies the sensitivities of the Chinese community in refusing to budge from the decision to promote those unversed in Mandarin to senior positions in Chinese primary schools.

Education Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, said in Malacca yesterday that the government will stand by its decision to promote non-Chinese educated teachers as headmasters and senior assistant in Chinese primary schools. MCA President, Datuk Dr. Ling Liong Sik, announced after a five-hour meeting of the MCA Central Committee yesterday, that the MCA cannot accept the promotion of those without Chinese language qualification as headmaster, assistant headmaster or senior assistants in Chinese primary schools, as this will lead to the change in character of Chinese primary schools and violate the Barisan Nasional 1986 general elections manifesto. Education Ministry, Anwar Ibrahim, said yesterday before leaving for Labuan that the Education Ministry would not compromise and would not withdraw the directive transferring those unversed in Mandarin on promotion as assistant headmasters and senior assistants to Chinese primary schools. DAP will launch a nation-wide ‘Save Chinese Primary Schools Campaign’ if the Education Ministry fails to resolve the problem of promoting those unversed in Chinese language as assistant headmasters and senior assistants of Chinese primary schools.

Last Friday, I gave the Education Ministry a two-week deadline to resolve the scandalous situation whereby those unversed in Chinese language were sent on promotion to Penang Chinese primary schools as assistant headmasters and senior assistants. This deadline will expire on 9th Oct. 1987. I had said that if this deadline expires without satisfactory resolution of this problem, the DAP will form an action committee to protest against such insensitive and deplorable decisions of the Education Ministry. DAP welcomes Ghaffar Baba’s assurance that the problem of the 18 Felda Taib Andak settlers will be resolved in two weeks.

I welcome the assurance of Deputy Prime Minister, Ghaffar Baba, at the National Association of Smallholders (NASH) general meeting yesterday that the problem of the 18 Felda Taib Andak settlers in Johore, and the general dispute over the issue of individual land titles to Felda settlers, would be resolved in two weeks.

As I told the 18 Felda Taib Andak settlers when a delegation of DAP MPs and 7 DAP Assemblymen visited them to understand their dispute with Felda, we hope that the DAP’s concern for the sufferings of Felda settlers will “shame” and ”motivate” the Government and UMNO leaders to deal with the grievances of Felda settlers more sympathetically and humbly.
