Malaysians have a right to know whether Dr. Mahathir Mohamed or Tun Hussien Onn is telling the truth about Cabinet approval for the 1981 Maminco tin-buying operation, which involved a loss of $660 million.

Malaysians are very concerned about the conflicting version between Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed and Tun Hussien Onn on whether the Cabinet had in 1980 given approval for the MAMINCO mysterious tin-buying in the London market in 1981, resulting in a $660 million loss to the country. When will $2 mysterious tin-buying company, MAMINCO, its annual refurns and accounts to the Registry of Companies for the past five years be files, to reduce it to show that it is not above the law and Parliament?

I am not surprised by the statement by the former Prime Minister, Tun Hussien Onn, that he was not aware of any Cabinet decision in 1980 committing the Government to enter the tin market on the London Metal Exchange. DAP lawyers to study the possibility of using the Government for causing the $1.5 billion Co-operative Calamity affecting 588,000 depositors because of its negligence and failure to wipe out co-operative fraud and malpractices despite having information for past five years.

The $1.5 billion Co-operative Calamity, wiping out the life-savings and even ‘coffin-money’ of 588,000 depositors, is the latest in a long series of scandals and catastrophes of the Barisan Nasional Government in the past three years which had shattered public confidence in the government, the system and the country – whether by Malaysians themselves or by foreigners, impeding economic recovery and undermining nation-building. DAP commends the Government for withdrawing the suspension order against Asian Wall Street Journal.

The Government’s admission of irregularity in the suspension order against the Asian Wall Street Journal is most welcome and commendable. I hope the government will fully respect the important doctrine of the separation of powers, the Independence of the Judiciary and the Rule of Law, and will not think of legislative actions to overrule judicial decisions as had happened in the past. The Government must produce $600 million to bail out the 588,000 co-perative depositors

Speech by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary-General, MP for Tanjung and Assemblyman for Kampong Kolam, Lim Kit Siang, at the ‘Protect the 588,000 Depositors of 24 Co-operatives Public November 14, 1986 at 8 p.m.

The Government must produce $600 million to bail out the 588,000 co-perative depositors as the Government is the biggest single cause for the Co-operative Finance Calamity BECAUSE of its negligence and failure to monitor the co-operatives and protect the depositors in the past five years

In the Government White Paper on the 24 deposit-taking co-operatives, the government said that it should not “ as a matter of principle underwrite each and every loss in institutions, be they companies, co-operatives or even statutory bodies.” The White Paper said the Government could not guarantee the deposits of the 24 co-operatives.
