Hope the DAP Parliamentary Reform Study Group would spark national interest in how to instill greater vigour, vitality and meaning in Malaysian Parliament

The DAP Parliamentary Group has decided to form a Parliamentary Reform Study Group because we feel that on the occasion of the forthcoming 30th anniversary of Malaysian nationhood, one of the most neglected areas of our political system- parliamentary reforms- must be addressed seriously. As the Government has shown no interest whatsoever in taking the initiative to undertake comprehensive study of needed parliamentary reforms, the DAP as a responsible Opposition has decided to fill this gap to the best of our ability. DAP praises Gerakan for opposing the OSA (Amendment) Bill 1986 and hopes that this is a serious and sincere stand, and not a one-upmanship to get temporary political mileage at the expense of MCA before toeing the Barisan Nasional line

DAP praises Gerakan for opposing the OSA (Amendment) Bill 1986 and hopes that this is a serious and sincere stand, and not a one-upmanship to get temporary political mileage at the expense of MCA before toeing the Barisan Nasional line.

I raise this question because the Gerakan President, Dr. Lim Keng Yaik, when announcing the decision of the Gerakan Central Committee yesterday urging the Governemnt to withdrawal the 1986 OSA (Amendment) Bill or refer it to a Parliament Select Committee, refused to comment when asked whether the Gerakan MPs would support the Bill in Parliament if the government refused to withdrawal it or refer it to a Select Committee. On Budget day, on Friday, Oct 24, the Finance Minister, Daim Zainuddin, painted a bleak and gloomy picture of Malaysian economy. The Finance Minister said Malaysians must be prepared for a period of low growth in real output for the next few years. Because of the drastic falls in prices of primary commodities, we would receive about $5,900 million less in export earnings from our primary commodities compared to 1985. I call on the Penang Chinese Town Hall and Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce to convene an emergency meeting of all Penang Chinese guilds, associations and organizations to discuss a rescue plan for the 47-year-old Penang-based Chinese daily, Sing Pin Jit Poh, so that it is not snuffed out because of the irresponsibility of Datuk Lim Kheng Khim or the insensitivity of Malayan Banking.
