Yesterday, at the illegal public rally in Seremban, the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, launched the Barisan Nasional’s political offensive against those who demand the full disclosure of the $2.5 billion BMF scandal and the publication of the BMP final report as people who are only out for ‘political gain’. DAP proposes a special parliamentary sitting on the BMF final report in mid-February and the establishment of a Special Parliamentary Inquiry Committee to conduct further investigations on the basis of the BMF final report

While I have welcomed the Cabinet decision yesterday to the full BMF final report in the next meeting of parliament on March 10, I note that the Government had not given any assurance that there would be full and adequate time for a special parliamentary debate on the final report. DAP calls on Cabinet on Wednesday to redeem public confidence by deciding on the immediate full publication of the BMF final report

Finance Minister, Daim Zainuddin, has called on the people to be patient and wait for the Cabinet’s decision whether the BMF final report would be made public. Daim Zainuddin and the other Cabinet Ministers should realise that the $2.5 billion BMF loans scandal has now a seven-year- long history, and public patience is wearing thin at the continued procrastination of the government to give a full public accounting. The Prime Minister’s curt refusal to allow Tan Sri Ahmad Nordin and Chooi Mum Sou the authority to release the Ahmad Nordin BKF final report, although they have both fulfilled the Prime Minister’s demand that they accept full responsibility for its publication, has dealt a shattering blow to the public confidence in government credibility. Yesterday, I sent a cable to the Prime Minister, Datuk Sri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, reminding him of his undertaking when I met him at the Prime Minister’s Office on 6th January 1986 that the government has no objection to the publication of the BMF final report if Tan Sri Ahmad Nordin accepts the responsibility for its publication. DAP urges Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir, to officially authorise Tan Sri Ahmad Nordin and Chooi Mun Sou to release the BMF final report on condition they assume full responsibility for its publication.

The DAP commends Tan Sri Ahmad Nordin and Chooi Mun Sou for their courageous public-spiritedness in their preparedness to accept full responsibility in publishing the BMF final report.
