The Government should stop harassing NGOs and show a constructive attitude to the positive role they play in the development of a mature “civil society” by giving them all possible assistance, including an annual RM20 million grant to fund their activities

The Government should stop harassing NGOs and show a constructive attitude to the positive role they play in the development of a mature “civil society” by giving them all possible assistance, including an annual RM20 million grant to fund their activities

Attorney-General praised for rejecting police investigations into the death of air-condition mechanic in police lock-up

Attorney-General praised for rejecting police investigations into the death of air-condition mechanic in police lock-up in Jalan Ipoh on May 12 and calls for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into the death of Lee Guat Leonq as well as in all cases of police bias in investigations involving police officers.

DAP commends the Attorney-General, Datuk Mohtar Abdullah for rejecting police investigations into the death of air-condition mechanic in police lock-up in Jalan Ipoh on May 12 and ordering a judicial inquiry to establish the Identity of the perpetrators to “clear ail doubts” in connection with the case.

Mohtar made it clear that the police investigation cast, serious and grave suspicion on certain officers over the death of Lee Quat Leong, 42, who was picked up on suspicion of involvement in the muiti-million-ringgit break -in at the Mayban Finance branch office at Taman Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, in March this year where burglars dubbed the “Tunnel Rats” burrowed into the strongroom of the finance company during the Halri Raya holidays and carted away cash, jewellery and other valuables amounting to about RM30 million. There cannot be a worse, start for the Independent. Board of Visitors for the immigration detention centres to protect the international reputation of Malaysia than to Jose public credibility and confidence because of government failure to honour its promise to appoint representives from the Opposition and independent. The Bukit Aman Police today issued a statement and claimed that it was not “interrogating” Tenaganita director Irene Fernandez but merely “recording statements” from her in connection with Tenaganita’s allegations of maltreatment of illegal immigrants at the immigration detention camps. Yesterday evening, just before I left the DAP Hqrs for the Subang International Airport to catch a flight to Penang, I learn of the Bukit Aman police statement that I have been asked to give clarification to the CID Director

An Indictment of Police bias when investigating government leaders and police officers as compared to Opposition leaders presented to Bukit Aman Police Headquarters by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary-General and MP for Tanjong, Lim Kit Siang, on Thursday, 28th September 1995

Yesterday evening, just before I left the DAP Hqrs for the Subang International Airport to catch a flight to Penang, I learn of the Bukit Aman police statement that I have been asked to give clarification to the CID Director. Datuk Mohd Said Awang on my statements calling on the police to withdraw the report against Irene Fernandez for criminal defamation, to co-operate in an independent inquiry into Tenaganita allegations about mal-treatment of Bangladeshi and other illegal immigrants in Imigration detention camps and for expressing my lack of confidence in the impartiality and independence of the Police when it has to conduct investigations involving government leaders and the Police.

I am always prepared to co-operate with the police in the public interest and I immediately cancelled my flight to Penang and phoned up Bukit Aman to contact as I was told CID director, Datuk Mohd Said Awang. I could not contact him as I was told he was playing golf.
