The Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, has said that the Mid-Term Review of the Fourth Malaysia Plan heralded new direction in development and implementation of strategies to take into account the structural weakness and constraints of the Malaysian economy highlighted by the severe global economic recession, and that the details of the contents of the policies, strategies and programmes of new thinking on development would be elaborated in the Fifth Malaysia Plan, 1986-90. The tabling of the Auditor-General’s Report on the 1981 Federal Government Accounts on Tuesday, 27.3.1984, and its subsequent withdrawal is most improper, unparliamentary and calls for a full and frank explanation by the Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamed. Although there are six more years, the question of the extension of the New Economic Policy after 1990 had become a major political and economic issue ever since the Asian Forecast interview with the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Musa Hitam, in June last year, with the follow-up pronouncements on the subject by UMNO Ministers and leaders and the resolution by the Wanita UMNO Assembly urging the government to extend the period for the implementation of the New Economic Policy from 1,990 to 2,000. The last few days saw an exchange of statements between the Chairman of the United Chinese School Associations of Management,
Mr. Lim Fong Seng, and the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, Anwar Ibrahim, over Anwar’s declaration two weeks ago at the UMNO Youth Seminar on Culture that debate on the National Culture Policy is closed and that the Government would not tolerate any questioning or criticism of the National Culture Policy.
