DAP to move a private member’s bill on Oct. 24 to establish the NBI as an Independence Agency answerable only to Parliament to free it from political or Ministerial influence so that it could energetically combat corruption at high political places

I have given notice to move a private member’s bill when Parliament begins on next Monday, Oct. 24, to amend the NBI Act to establish the NBI as an independent agency answerable only to Parliament, so that it will be free from political or Ministerial influence or interference so as to be able to deal with the basic problem of corruption in Malaysia – corruption in high public place. Selangor/Federal Territory Elections Preparatory Committee given one month to show results

I had suggested the holding of a meeting of the Selangor/Federal Territory Elections Preparatory Committee tonight at 7.30 p.m. partly to express my dissatisfaction with the work this Committee had done since its formation in August.

Until 8 p.m., only five out of 11 members had turned up. The Chairman had also not yet turned up. I left because I had no time to waste waiting for the meeting to begin. Continue reading From the SG’s Desk

On a clean, honest and incorrupt government

(Speech by the Parliamentary Leader, DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Kota Melaka, Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Rakyat when moving a motion to introduce a private member’s bill to be known as Ministers and Members of Parliament (Declaration of Assets) Act 1978 on October 18, 1977)

I rise under Standing Orders 49 to move a motion to seek leave of the House to introduce a private member’s bill to be known as Ministers and Members of Parliament (Declaration of Assets) 1978 Bill requiring every Minister and Member of Parliament to publicly declare his or her assets annually and that of the next of kin.

The Prime Minister, Datuk Hussein Onn, has a personal reputation of being opposed to corrupt practices, the country has a National Bureau of Investigations, and every now and then we read of departmental heads requiring their public servants to declare their assets. But it cannot be denied that corruption in Malaysia is a rampant problem, with many top political and public servants possessing unaccounted wealth and property.
