The transfer of the National Bureau of Investigations from the Prime Minister’s Department early this year to the Ministry of Law and A.G.’s Department was seen as a downgrading of the NBI. During my speech on the 1977 Budget on No. 1, I asked for an investigation into the ‘Russian connection’ of the Great Malaysia Line Sdn, Bhd., which runs pilgrim ships to Mecca, as two top UMNO leaders who have been most vociferous about the irreconciliability of Islam and communism were involved. The DAP Central Executive Committee, at an emergency meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, 8th Nov. 1976 called to discuss the detention of DAP MP for Batu Gajah, Sdr. Chian Heng Kai and DAP Assistant National Treasurer, Sdr. Chan Kok Kit, decided to send a delegation to meet the Minister, Dato Hussein Onn, to seek for their immediate release. I am shocked by the viciousness of Dato Senu Abdul Rahman’s attack on me in his speech in the Dewan Rakyat on November 4. This is the normal reaction of a desperate person rather than a person who is prepared to let the facts apeak for themselves. DAP calls for reform of income tax laws

DAP calls for reform of income tax laws to provide for an educational rebate for Malaysians with less than $15,000 annual income to finance their children’s post-institutions in Malaysia or abroad.

Viewed in the light of past budgets, where the general tendency is to impose increasingly heavy incidence of taxation on Malaysians, particularly the lower income groups, Tengku Razaleigh’s maiden budget featuring the $60 income tax rebate appears to be a relief. Educational tax rebate proposal

Income tax laws, to be an instrument of equity and the fairer distribution of income and social opportunities, must not be rigid and inflexible – but must be alive to the economic problems and difficulties of taxpayers.

There has been a lot of talk about restructuring of society, but there does not appear to be any realisation of the need to restructure our taxation laws to achieve a progressive, poverty-free Malaysia. Continue reading Educational tax rebate proposal
