The basis problems of Chinese Education in Malaysia

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a joint meeting of the Bukit Bintang DAP Brach and the Pudu DAP Branch at the Bukit Bintang DAP Branch premises at Jalan Treacher, Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, 24th Oct. 1971 at 8 p.m. at the end of his two inspection tour of the Bukit Nanas constituency

The basis problems of Chinese Education in Malaysia

For the past several weeks, Chinese school teachers and the Chinese press have been pre-occupied with the Aziz Report and its recommendations.

Much as the Chinese teachers should fight for improved salary scales, and much as the public should support them, the Chinese school teachers should never lose sight of the basic problems and issues of Chinese education in the country. DAP MP’s and SA’s will not join so-called overseas fact-finding visits

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the DAP Pudu Branch, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday, 23rd Oct. 1971 before starting his inspection tour of the Bukit Nanas Constituency which will continue tomorrow.

DAP MPs and SAs will not join so-called overseas fact-finding visits, which are in fact pleasure trips at public expense.

This constituency, Bukit Nanas constituency, is the second of my visit in my series of national tour of all DAP parliamentary and state constituencies to check on the constituency performance of DAP Members of Parliament and State Assemblymen, and to seek public views as to how DAP constituency service can be further improved.

The DAP is a serious political movement, with a serious political objective. All DAP Members of Parliament and State Assemblymen will discharge their duties to the constituency, party and country diligently and conscientiously. Tamil education in Malaysia

Speech by DAP Secretary-General, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the official opening of the DAP National Tamil-speaking Seminar at Morib on Saturday, Oct. 23 at 9 a.m.

Tamil education in Malaysia

It may be said that Tamil education structure in Malaysia has a base and a top, but no middle. Secondary education in Tamil is absent, though there are a few Tamil primary schools at the base and a Department of Indian Studies in the University of Malaya at the top.

Those who study Tamil at university are students who have succeeded in retaining their limited proficiency in the language through private informal study. This must surely affect standards of teaching in the university and hamper the further development of the Department of Indian Studies as a place for Tamil literary learning of a high order. DAP calls on Minister of Labour to take swift and stern action against Killinghall Tin Mine

Press Statement by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang on 17th October 1971.

DAP calls on Minister of Labour to take swift and stern action against Killinghall Tin Mine for replacement of 147 permanent workers by contract labour

I welcome the speech by the Minister of Labour, Tan Sri V. Manickavasagam, to the National Mining Workers’ Union of Malaya during the weekend hitting out at employers who replace their staff with contract labour just to cut costs.

However, stronger action than speeches is needed. I have therefore today written to the Minister of Labour asking him to take swift and stern action against the Killinghall Tin Mine management in Puchong, Selangor, which retrenched 147 permanent workers on Oct. 1, and replaced them by cheaper contract labour to cut costs, even though workers who had worked for as long as 19 years were thrown out of work.
