Statement by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a press conference held at 86, Jonker street, Malacca, on Monday, 21st December 1970 at 10.30 a.m.

Alliance masterplan to buy over DAP MPs and State Assemblymen

The Alliance has a masterplan to buy over DAP MPs and State Assemblymen to defect to the Alliance.

Alliance intermediaries are approaching DAP MPs and State Assemblymen with offers of money, position, office and economic inducements to persuade them to cross over to the Alliance. In some cases, these material inducements are not so direct and blatant, the approach made seemingly on an intellectual level. But underlying these approaches even, the material inducements is held out indirectly. Continue reading Alliance masterplan, religious persecutions & 1971 Budget

Kepong Squatters

DAP Secretary-General and M.P. for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today issues the following statement:

Kepong Squatters

Together with the M.P. for Damansara and State Assemblyman for Penchala, Sdr. Hor Cheok Foon, the State Assemblyman for Serdang, Sdr. Yap Pian Hon, Sdr. Lau Dak Kee and Sdr. Khoo Thin Fook, I visited Kepong and the aquatters who are affected by the present squatter clearance exercise.

The Kepong squatter problem is not an isolated local problem, but a national problem, as it is part of a Kuala Lumpur-wide exercise to clear and uproot the life of about 200,000 people – one third of the people of Kuala Lumpur. Continue reading Kepong Squatters

Call to Tun Dr. Ismail to intervene to ensure that Peter Mojuntin is not arrested and silenced by Sabah State authorities for exercising his basic right to speak out

The DAP calls on the Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Tun Dr. Ismail, to intervene immediately to ensure that Peter Mojuntin, Member of Parliament from Sabah, is not arrested by the Sabah State authorities for protesting against religious persecution in Sabah.

Peter Mojuntin has made a very serious allegation involving a violation of one of the fundamental liberties enshrined in Clause II of the Malaysian Constitution – namely, “Every person has the right to profess and practice his religion and to propagate it.” Continue reading Religious persecution in Sabah

Notice to move a motion of censure against Tun Tan Siew Sin if he imposes taxes without Parliamentary approval

Despite DAP and widespread public protests, the Finance Minister, Tun Tan Siew Sin, seems bent in his refusal to present the 1971 Ordinary Budget to Parliament for debate and approval. Tun Tan will only present his 1971 Ordinary Budget to National Operations Council on Dec. 18. where he need not justify his financial policies and new taxes to the elected representatives of the people. Election Pledges in Penang

Opening Statement at a press conference by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at Penang on Tuesday, 24th Nov. 1970 at 12p.m.

Advise to Dr. Lim Chong Eu to make a clean break from his Alliance past and to fulfil his election pledges to Penang

During my present visit, I am surprised to find the growing chorus and rising crescendo of disillusionment and disenchantment with the Gerakan State Government of Penang fold by the ordinary people in this State.

Many people feel that after toppling the 12-year-old Alliance misrule, they have voted into office an opposition government which do not differ very much from the precious regime. Continue reading Election Pledges in Penang

The last chance for democracy in Malaysia

Speech by DAP Secretary General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a dinner given by Penang DAP at Sun Hoe Penang Restaurant on Sunday, Nov. 22 1970 at 8pm.

The last chance for democracy in Malaysia

I am overwhelmed by the great reception given by Penang DAP members and the public on the occasion of my unconditional release from detention.

One reason why I was able to withstand the test I underwent during my 16-month long detention was my knowledge and confidence that although I has lost personal freedom, outside the Muar Detention Camp, I had the support of millions of Malaysians to share with me and the DAP the same aspirations for a democratic socialist Malaysian Malaysia, and for which I was being detained. Setbacks in Malaysian Labour

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr.Lim Kit Siang, at the DAP Labour Bureau meeting on Wednesday, 4th Nov. 1970 at 8p.m. in Kuala Lumpur

For the past 18 months, the cause of labour in Malaysia suffered a series of setbacks.

Last year, the government prohibited officers of political parties from holding office in a trade union allegedly “to ensure that individual unions and the trade union movement shall be led by bona fide workers.”

This was followed by a barrage of blatantly anti-labour acts by the government, e.g. denying dismissed employees the right to union representation, the prohibition of public employees from federating with private –sector workers, the putting in cold storage of women’s equal pay issue and the salary claims of government employees, etc..
