I have today written to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed asking for access to the Cabinet meeting minutes of Oct. 26, 1980, and July 8, 1981, as well as the agreement entered into between Maminco and Marc Rich on June 25, 1981, to establish the genesis of the $2 company, Maminco, which caused the country to lose $660 million from its 1981 London tin-buying operation. Malaysians have a right to know whether Dr. Mahathir Mohamed or Tun Hussien Onn is telling the truth about Cabinet approval for the 1981 Maminco tin-buying operation, which involved a loss of $660 million.

Malaysians are very concerned about the conflicting version between Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed and Tun Hussien Onn on whether the Cabinet had in 1980 given approval for the MAMINCO mysterious tin-buying in the London market in 1981, resulting in a $660 million loss to the country. Daim Zainuddin’s 1987 Budget cannot manage Malaysia’s deepening economic crisis as it does not inspire Malaysians that the Government is prepared to recognize and resolve the Crisis of Confidence in the country

On Budget day, on Friday, Oct 24, the Finance Minister, Daim Zainuddin, painted a bleak and gloomy picture of Malaysian economy. The Finance Minister said Malaysians must be prepared for a period of low growth in real output for the next few years. Because of the drastic falls in prices of primary commodities, we would receive about $5,900 million less in export earnings from our primary commodities compared to 1985. Monday’s Business Times reported that Pernas is interested in buying the 51 per cent UMBC stake owned by Daim Zainuddin’s family companies. I understand that Pernas is negotiating to buy the Daim Zainuddin family companies’ UMBC shares at $8.50 per share.
