The latest political developments in the country, and in particular the turmoil in UMNO with the recent challenge to Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed as UMNO President, the sacking and removal of five UMNO Ministers and four deputy Ministers, has created a new political scenario whereby general elections could be held as early as within 50 months. DAP will definitely be contesting in the Gopeng parliamentary by-election

I confirm that I met MCA President, Datuk Dr. Ling Liong Sik, yesterday in Kuala Lumpur for 1½ hours. I must stress that this is a ‘private’ rather than a ‘secret’ meeting.

Both of us agreed that the discussions will remain ‘private’ to both parties, and as such I have nothing to say about our discussions, except that they dealt with the national political problems, and in particular the ten areas which I had referred to in Ipoh last Saturday, relating to the dilemma faced by the Malaysian Chinese thirty years after Merdeka. MCA Deputy President, Datuk Lee Kim Sai, said in Gopeng yesterday that if I could deliver the whole refund in cash to the 588,000 depositors in the 24 co-operatives whose activities were frozen by Bank Negara, the MCA would be willing to give the DAP a walk-over in the coming Gopeng parliamentary by-election. DAP’s Raub-by-election victory shows that the DAP not only can regain seats lost in April 1982 general elections as in Kepayang, but also capture seats never won by DAP before
