Corruption in Malaysia: DAP wants all-party inquiry committee into causes of corruption

Speech by Serdang State by-election candidate, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, who is also DAP Organising Secretary, at a DAP by-election rally at Petaling Tin Mine, Sungei Way, on Tuesday, 17th December 1968 at 8 p.m.

Corruption in Malaysia: DAP wants all-party inquiry committee into causes of corruption

Point Ten of DAP’s Serdang by-election pledge, known as Serdang’s 20 Points, called for the “Elimination of corruption, at all levels of public life, particularly at high levels.”

Corruption in public life in Malaysia has increased under the Alliance rule over the years. It has infected almost every level of public life, from the lowliest to the highest.

The Alliance government lacks the will and resolution to stamp out corruption because the biggest offenders are to be found among Alliance political leaders, who make use of their position, power and influence for personal monetary gain. A question for Mr. Michael Chen

Speech by DAP Candidate for Serdang State by-election, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, who is also DAP Organising Secretary, at the sixth DAP Serdang by-election rally at Salak South new village on Saturday, 14th December 1968.

A question for Mr. Michael Chen

A week ago, I asked the Alliance candidate, Mr. Thuan Phaik Phok, whether he support the DAP stand that “land does not belong to any one race or community, but belong to the nation, and should be given to Malaysian landless, regardless of race.”

Instead of giving a straightforward answer, Mr. Thuan tried to point out that there is a contradiction in the statement. Continue reading A question for Mr. Michael Chen

Serdang by-election a test for the cause of multi-racialism

The DAP Organising Secretary and DAP Candidate for the Serdang State by-election (Selangor), Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (28.11.68) issued the following statement after Nomination:

The Serdang State by-election is a test for the cause of multi-racialism and a Malaysian Malaysia.

Since independence, the forces of racialism and cultural and language chauvinism, as represented by the Alliance, and lately by the Gerakan as enunciated by its cultural expert, Dr. Syed Naguib Alatas, have dominated Malaysian political life.

This is why with every passing year, there is growing national division – because the various races, cultures and languages do not feel that they have a equal stake in a Malaysian nation, where there is no economic and political equality, cultural and language liberty, and social justice.

The Penang racial riots last year could be traced directly to this growing national mood of alienation among Malaysians.

All Malaysians who believe in the cause of a multi-racial Malaysia, and reject a communal and chauvinist Malaysia based on one language, one culture, must unite now to turn the tide of growing racialism. If we don’t act resolutely now, and defeat the forces of racialism in the constitutional and democratic arena, it may be too late. Operation ‘Voters Check’

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to the Sentul DAP Branch on Wednesday, October 30, 1968 at 8 p.m.

The DAP Headquarters has instructed all its branches in the country to carry out a house-to-house campaign in their respective areas to check that voters who had voted in the 1959 and 1964 general elections are still on the electoral register.

We found that in the recent Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, at one polling centre alone, there were several hundred voters who have lost their right to vote because their names had been struck off from the electoral register, although they had voted in previous elections and had not moved to new addresses. The Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election: A Review and Appraisal

Talk by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to the Klang DAP Branch on Saturday, October 26, 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Democratic Action Party did creditably well in the Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election. Although we did not win, we have given the Alliance a shock in their Segamat stronghold, and laid a strong basis for victory in the next general elections.

Before the Nomination Day, we had no local organisation in Segamat, as our branch had not been officially set up, and we had only a few members in Segamat. Continue reading The Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election: A Review and Appraisal

Polling day for Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the final DAP Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election rally at Gemas Bahru on Friday, October 18, 1968 at 8 p.m.

Tomorrow is polling day for Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election. We urge the voters of Segamat Utara to come out and vote for the Rocket and the DAP Candidate, Lee Ah Meng, and reject the Alliance, both for the Alliance record in Segamat and the nation.

The late Alliance Member of Parliament for Segamat Utara never said a single word in Parliament in the last ten years, either to voice the hardships and problems of the people, like the development tax and the 10-cents telephone levy, nor did he take part in any of the parliamentary debates about the future of the country. Segamat Utara voters will go to the polls

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election rally at Kampong Abdullah, Segamat, on Thursday, October 17, 1968 at 8 p.m.

In two days time, the voters of Segamat Utara will go to the polls to decide who should be their next Member of Parliament.

They have before them, two candidates, two parties and two policies.

The Alliance stands for dividing Malaysians into bumiputras and non-bumiputras. This division is not based on place of birth, citizenship or loyalty, but on colour of the skin. Continue reading Segamat Utara voters will go to the polls

Segamat Utara voters urged to teach the Alliance a lesson

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to a DAP Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election rally at Jementah, Segamat, on Saturday, October 12 at 8 p.m.

Segamat Utara voters urged to teach the Alliance a lesson on polling day to remind them that they are servants and not masters of the people.

Polling day for the Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election is only a week away. In seven days, the people of Segamat Utara will have a choice between two candidates, two parties and two policies.

The Alliance had betrayed the people of Segamat in the last ten years, because during this period, they had an Alliance Member of Parliament who never visited them, neglected the constituency, and was completely indifferent to the problems of the people. The ten questions to the Alliance candidate for Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election. Inche Musa Hitam

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today issued the following statement (3.10.68):

The Alliance candidate for the Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election, Inche Musa Hitam, has issued a very long statement, in reply to ten questions I asked him at a DAP public rally in Jementah, Segamat Utara, last week.

The voters of Segamat Utara can draw their own conclusions from Inche Musa Hitam’s statement, which has raised more questions.

I hope Inche Musa Hitam will answer these new questions in a clear-cut manner, so that Segamat Utara voters can understand his thinking and outlook.

(1) Bumiputras and non-bumiputras:
Inche Musa Hitam quoted Tunku Abdul Rahman to say that ‘bumiputra’ has no legal definition, and that anyone can call himself a ‘bumiputra.’ Continue reading The ten questions to the Alliance candidate for Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election. Inche Musa Hitam

A historic choice before the voters of Segamat Utara

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the first DAP Segamat Utara by-election rally held at the Segamat town padang on Wednesday, 25th September 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Segamat Utara Parliamentary by-election is important not only to Segamat, but to the entire nation.

If the Segamat voters solidly vote for the DAP and reject the Alliance, they will give a fillip to the rising national reaction against the failures and follies of 13 years of Alliance rule, and ensure that in the next general elections, a strong team of Opposition Parliamentarians will be elected to check the financial excesses and abuse of power of the Alliance government.
