DAP’s participation in Rembau-Tampin by-election proof of DAP’s inner strength and basic resilience

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, when speaking to Malacca DAP State Sub-Committee and Branch representative on Friday, 23rd June 1972 at 7p.m.

DAP’s participation in Rembau-Tampin by-election proof of DAP’s inner strength and basic resilience

The DAP Central Executive Committee, on June 18, 1972, has started to purge the Party of destructive and disruptive elements in the Party.

Discipline should be fearlessly enforced in the Party, regardless of one’s position, officer or capability, if the DAP is to continue as a serious political movement. Continue reading DAP’s participation in Rembau-Tampin by-election proof of DAP’s inner strength and basic resilience

The importance of the coming Ulu Selangor by-election

Johore Politics

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr Lim Kit Siang, when he officially opened the Chamek DAP Branch in Johor on 27th August 1971 at 4pm

The official opening of the Chamek DAP Branch marks the first fruit of the DAP’s campaign in the Bekok by-election in May this year.

Although we lost the by-election, we have succeeded in establishing nuclei of dedicated supporters and members of the Party in the constituency, which will be further evidenced in the next few days when the Cha’ah DAP Branch and the Niyor DAP Branch will be officially opened.

It is not an easy matter to build up a branch. It is even more difficult to maintain it. They call for a high quality of dedication, sacrifice, public spiritedness and commitment to the cause for a democratic socialist Malaysia from our members, cadres and officials. Bekok State by-election in Johore

Bekok State by-election in Johore

The Bekok state by-election campaign is a week-old. We stand an even chance of winning the state seat if we can concentrate our national manpower and resources in the constituency.

The stakes involves in Bekok are not merely local or even of State interest. They are of great national importance and significance, both for us in the DAP and for the Alliance, and in particular the MCA.

If we win in Bekok, it will mean a vindication and endorsement of our party stand in post-May 13 Malaysia and in Parliament over the Constitution Amendment Bill. Continue reading Bekok State by-election in Johore

More branches in Serdang State and Damansara Parliamentary constituency

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a tea party at Serdang Bahru DAP Branch to thank Serdang by-election workers on Tuesday, December 31, at 8 p.m.

DAP to open more branches in Serdang State and Damansara Parliamentary constituency, including in Salak South new village, Kuchai, Puchong, in preparation for the coming general elections

Although we just missed victory in the Serdang by-election because of the splitting of votes by the Gerakan and bad weather in the evening of poling day which stopped many workers from coming out to vote, the DAP has made an impact on the people of Serdang and the country at large. In reply to Lim Tian Kaik

The DAP Serdang State by-election candidate, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, who is also DAP Organising Secretary (29.12.68)

I have never seen a more low-class statement than the one issued by the Political Secretary, Mr. Lim Tian Kaik.

Any Malaysian who had been following my statements and speeches in the press and public meetings will know that Mr. Lim’s statement contained a tissue of fabrications, distortions and downright lies.

It is clear that Mr. Lim is being paid over $1,000 out of public funds just to tell lies for the MCA.

Mr. Lim’s statement betrays the character and personality of the writer – completely without honestly and regard for truth.

I hereby, with deliberation and purpose, call Mr. Lim Tian Kaik a liar. If he is a man of honour, he can sue me, and he will have to pay the legal costs.

I regret that I have to use such a strong word as ‘liar’, but there is no better description.

The day of voting and the night of judgement

Speech by the DAP Candidate for the Serdang State by-election, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, who is also DAP Organising Secretary, at the final DAP by-election rally at Sungei Way New Village on Friday, December 27, 1968 at 8 p.m.

Tomorrow, 28th December 1968, is the day of voting and the night of judgement by 24,000 voters of Serdang.

The question is how many of the 24,000 voters will come out to vote and exercise judgement. In the past election, the percentage of voting in urban areas and new villages are always much lower than the percentage of voting in kampong areas. This is not because the voters in urban areas and new villages are politically more backward than the kampong people, but because the Alliance made used of the penghulu system to make sure that every kampong voter comes out to vote, and vote the Alliance.

This element of compulsion does not exist in urban areas and new village. This way why in kampongs, the voting percentage was always in the region of 90 per cent, while the voting per centage in towns and new village around 60 per cent.

This must not happen in Serdang, because a low percentage of voting will benefit the Alliance, and ensure an Alliance victory. Already in the Malay press, M. P. for the area, Mr. Michael Chen, has blatantly called for the Malay voter to vote for the Alliance to help defeat the DAP. Continue reading The day of voting and the night of judgement

Lim Kit Siang replies to Mr. Michael Chen

The DAP Candidate for Serdang State by-election, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, who is also DAP Organising Secretary, today (24.12.68) issued the following statement in reply to Mr. Michael Chen.

Mr. Michael Chen did not deny that before December 10, 1968, he had promised the three Yap families that they would be allowed to continue to live on their land, and grow their fruit trees.

Mr. Michael Chen talks about being a gentleman. Surely one of the qualities of a gentleman is to keep one’s promise.

Mr. Michael Chen said there is no law in Malaysia to compel the State Government to pay compensation to the three Yap families. But there is no law in Malaysia to forbid payment of compensation.

It is a question of social conscience and social justice. I know Mr. Michael Chen is a lawyer, and that the law has been made used off by the rich and privileged to bully the weak and the defenceless. Continue reading Lim Kit Siang replies to Mr. Michael Chen

The Gerakan’s role in the Serdang by-election

Speech by DAP Serdang State by-election candidate, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, and DAP Organising Secretary, at a DAP by-election rally at Kuchai 6m.s. on December 23, 1968:

In this by-election, the Gerakan Ra’ayat Malaysia is going all out to attack and slander the DAP and its leaders.

Those who attend by-election rallies will bear this out. At Gerakan rallies, Gerakan speakers hardly talk about the Alliance. All that they are interested in is attacking the DAP. On the other hand, at DAP rallies, we hardly mention the Gerakan. Our sole object of attack is the Alliance.

Yet Dr. Tan Chee Khoon has been issuing press statements, accusing the DAP of devoting more attack on the Gerakan than on the Alliance.

Why did Dr. Tan Chee Khoon tell such a deliberate falsehood? Continue reading The Gerakan’s role in the Serdang by-election

Rural health centre and industrialisation of Serdang

Speech by DAP Serdang State by-election candidate, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, and DAP Organising Secretary, at the DAP by-election rally at Kampong Sentosa, Petaling, on Wednesday, 18th December, at 8 p.m.

Point Two of DAP’s Serdang by-election pledge, the Serdang Twenty Points, called for “Priority attention to rural health, social life and education to improve the livelihood of the farmers.”

Serdang Bahru new village is the second largest new village in Malaysia, but it does not have a health centre and clinic to look after its population of 20,000 people, without taking into account the people living in surrounding areas.

This is proof of the utter disregard and neglect of the Alliance government for the welfare of the people in new village.

The government prefers spending millions of dollars on building golf courses, which benefits only the already well-to-do, and in sending Alliance leaders and government officials round the world on pleasure trips, than in building health centres for new villages.
