On Tuesday, at the Prime Minister’s reception for him on his retirement as a Cabinet Minister, the former MCA President and Finance Minister, Tun Tan Siew Sin, suggested that a bipartisan approach be developed on issues like education, language and inflation.

He said:” In a multi-racial society like ours where such issues generate more than usual heat, because of their racial or emotional overtones, there is all the more reason to lift them from the arena of politics in order to arrive at a national consensus on them.” Continue reading Bipartisan Politics

Today, the Perak MCA is holding a Perak State Chinese Economic Congress. Early this year, a national Chinese economic seminar was held in Kuala Lumpur by the MCA. In the 1969 general elections, the percentage of votes polled by the Alliance feel by 14% from a respectable majority of 58.5% in 1964 to a minority vote of 44.9%.

On Saturday, in a talk to the Guild of Graduates of Kuala Lumpur, Dr. Lim Chong Eu accused all those who are opposed to the National Front and coalition governments as ‘anti-national’.

1. Fan Yew Teng’s case: A test of the people’s will to withstand undermocratic encroachment against basic freedoms.

Three days ago, Sdr. Fan Yew Teng, DAP National Organising Secretary and M.P. for Kempar, was re-arrested and re-charged under the Sedition Act after winning an appeal all the way to the Privy Council on the same subject matter.

It is clear to all that the re-charge is motivated solely by political considerations on the hope of breaking the will of Sdr.Fan Yew Teng and other DAP leaders and activities to oppose the unjust and undemocratic policies of the Alliance, or to bankrupt the party by involving it in expensive litigation, or preferably both.

Of all the opposition parties in Malaysia, no other party has suffered greater persecution or suppression than the DAP, for it is the only party which has dared to stand up unflinchingly for the rights of the downtrodden as amply illustrated by our record in Parliament, the State Assemblies and in public. DAP calls for a National Front of Opposition Parties

The year 1972 marks the end of three opposition parties in West Malaysia, namely Party Gerakan, the People’s Progressive Party and Parti Islam, and their absorption by the Alliance under the banner of National Front of Coalition Parties.
