Establishment of PBS-USNO Coalitiion Government a major setback for UMNO’s entry into Sabah

The establishment of PBS-USNO Coalition Government in Sabah is a major setback for UMNO Baru’s entry into Sabah.

It in fact raises the whole question of the viability of UMNO Baru in Sabah and this answer will only be known in the next Sabah state general elections – as to whether UMNO in Sabah or USNO would be wiped out or whether UMNO and UNSO would fight to a draw in the contest for support of the Sabah Malay voters. Rafidah’s call for deregistration of Semangat 46 is part of the mounting political pressure on the Registrar of Societies to dissolve Semangat 46

Although Deputy Prime Minister, Ghafar Baba, claims that the deregistration notice issued by the Registrar of Societies to Semangat 46 was not a political issue, but a matter between the Registrar of Societies and Semangat 46, the mounting demands and pressures by the UMNO Baru leaders, both national and state, indicate otherwise. by Parliamentary Opposition Leader, DAP Secretary-General and MP for Tanjung, Lim Kit Siang, in Penang on Tuesday, March 16, 1993:

Gerakan is getting as panicky as MCA over the erosion of UMNO’s Malay power base

The MCA national leadership conceived and launched the Langkawi Project because it is very concerned that UMNO’s political power base in the rural areas had been undermined as a result of the constitutional crisis over the Rulers’ immunity, to the extent that UMNO would not be able to muster its bank of Malay votes to the rescue of MCA candidates in the next general elections.
