Statement by DAP Secretary-General, Member of Parliament for Kota Melaka and State Assemblyman for Kubu, Lim Kit Siang, at a Press conference at DAP Malacca State Headquarters at 33A Jalan Munshi Abdullah, on Friday, 30th August 1974 at 11 a.m.

1. Call on leaders and members of Pekemas and other opposition parties and groups to join force with the DAP to present a strong opposition force to the National Front and promote the development of a two-party system in Malaysia

In the 1974 General Elections, the DAP succeeded in foiling the attempt of the National Front to impose a one-party state and government by the total elimination of Opposition parliamentary and state assembly candidates through a combination of unfair and undemocratic methods, e.g. the short campaign period; the control of the mass media especially radio and television; and the mass deregistration of voters especially in the urban areas where the National Front is unable to secure general popular support. 1. Record-breaking crowd at Ipoh DAP Public Rally

I have just returned from Ipoh where I attended the DAP Public Rally in both in Ipoh and Batu Gajah. The turn-out at the Ipoh DAP Public Rally at the Children’s Playground is the biggest in the history of Perak, and is easily in the region of 25,000. The crowds of Tun Razak, which have invariably be stated to be 20,000 or 30,000 are very small by comparison by last night’s DAP rally turn-out. Chances of DAP capturing Perak State Government good

Statement by DAP Secretary-General and Parliamentary Candidate for Kota Melaka, Lim Kit Siang, at a Press Conference in Ipoh on Monday, 19th August 1974 at 11.30 a.m.

1. Chances of DAP capturing Perak State Government good

The chances of the DAP capturing Perak State Government in the August 24 general elections is good, provided that every vote is cast for the Rocket candidate.

At the Malaysian level, the National Front will form the Malaysian government with Tun Razak again as Prime Minister, but I urge the people where all the 46 Parliamentary candidates of the DAP is contesting to solidly vote for DAP candidates to deny the two-thirds majority to the National front to tamper with the constitution at will. Speech by DAP Secretary-General, Lim Kit Siang, at a Pre-General Elections Rally at Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, on Saturday 3rd August 1974 at 9 p.m.

Four Reasons why the 210,835 Federal Territory voters should vote solidly for the DAP in the General Elections

There are at least four reasons why the 210,835 voters in the five Federal Territory Parliamentary seats should vote solidly for all the five DAP candidates who will be contesting in the Federal Capital.

Firstly, the quarter of a million voters in the Federal Territory should reject all the National Front candidates to demonstrate their protest and opposition to the constant tampering with the Constitution which, among other things, abolished eight State Assembly seats in Kuala Lumpur and abrogated their basic democratic right, to have their own Assemblymen. The government has announced the trebling of deposits for Parliamentary candidates from $500 to $1,500 and for State Assembly candidates from $250 to $750.

The raising of the deposits has made politics in Malaysia even more of a rich man’s game, with the result that the voice of the poor will have less chance to be heard in Parliament and the State Assemblies.
