Merdeka University and National University

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP public rally at Setapak Hotsprings, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur, on Monday, August 26 at 8.30 p.m.

DAP calls on government to:

(i) support Merdeka University and National University project.
(ii) develop the Technical College into a College of Technology.

On July 14, the MCA announced the proposed establishment of a $20 million MCA College.

On the very same day, the government, through the Minister of Education, Inche Khir Johari, immediately pledged the government’s support and blessing for the MCA project. The government also pledged $10 million contribution. Continue reading Merdeka University and National University

Reprieve of death penalty to the eternal credit of Malaysia

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (25.8.68) issued the following statement:

The commutation of the death sentence of the 11 Johore youths to life imprisonment is to the eternal credit of the Sultan of Johore and the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Operation Registration

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to the Jelupang DAP Branch on Sunday, August 18, 1968 at 8 p.m.

The Democratic Action Party will launch a nation-wide campaign from September 1 to October 10 to get citizens who have not registered as voters to register themselves.

This will be the last chance to register before the next general elections. It is the basic duty of a citizen in a democratic country to exercise his vote in elections, to take part in the democratic process of deciding how this country is to be governed. Continue reading Operation Registration

The moral crisis in Malaysia

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Second Anniversary Celebration of the Rocket Journal at the Kampar DAP Branch on Sunday, August 18, 1968 at 4.30 p.m.

For six weeks, Malaysian underwent a moral crisis as to whether to execute the 13 youths condemned for consorting with the Indonesian during Confrontation.

There were people who campaigned for the execution of the youths, the most notable of whom were the MCA Secretary-General, Mr. Kam Woon Wah, and the Political Secretary to the Minister of Finance, Mr. Bernard Lu. Continue reading The moral crisis in Malaysia

Motion to reprieve the death sentence of the 13 condemned

Talk by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to members and supporters at Pusing, Perak, on Saturday, August 17, 1968 at 7.30 p.m

Appeal to Tunku to withdraw the whip to allow Alliance MPs to vote according to conscience on the motion to reprieve the death sentence of the 13 condemned.

When the motion seeking a reprieve of the death sentence of the 13 condemned youths is put to a vote in Parliament next week, we urge the Prime Minister to allow MPs to vote according to individual conscience, and not in conformity with any party line.

DAP hails stay of execution of the 11 condemned

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (16.8.68) issued the following statement:

The people of all races in Malaysia, and of all nationalities throughout the world, sighed with relief on the announcement by the Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, declaring a stay of execution of the 11 condemned youths.

Malaysia, which has been standing trial at the bar of world opinion for six weeks as to whether we are a nation of mercy, compassion, and humanity, or whether we are an unfeeling, callous and heartless people, has gone some way to redeem her name and image in the world. Malaysian conscience on trial at the bar of world opinion

Malaysia is now standing trial at the bar of world opinion, as to whether we are a nation of mercy, compassion and humanity, or whether we are an unfeeling, callous and heartless people.

The liberal conscience throughout the world have been agitated by the Malaysian government’s grim and unswerving determination to hang the 13 youths. Never before have the world attention been so focussed on Malaysia, to find out whether Malaysia has a soul and a conscience. Senu’s “tension high” statement may heighten tension when there isn’t any

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (24.7.68) issued the following statement:

The Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Inche Senu bin Abdul Rahman, has given a serious warning that tension had become high among a certain section of the population over the clemency appeal for the 11 men condemned to death for consorting with the Indonesian confrontationists.

Senu dims hope for clemency plea for 11 Johore youths

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr Lim Kit Siang, today (22.7.68) issued the following statement:

Disbelief, dismay and shock must have been the reaction of compassionate Malaysians today when they read about the speech by the UMNO Youth Leader, Inche Senu bin Abdul Rahman, yesterday that the plea for a stay of execution of the 11 youths in Johore made by the editorial of the Alliance Party Journal, the Alliance, does not represent the views of Alliance leaders .

In his speech to the annual delegates conference of the Kinta Utara UMNO Youth Division, Inche Senu has dimmed the hopes of the majority of Malaysians who wish to see these 11 youths spared the supreme penalty of death. Continue reading Senu dims hope for clemency plea for 11 Johore youths
