DAP calls on the Government to abolish surtax on motor spare parts, tyres and other accessories and the slash the import duties on diesel to prevent increase of bus and taxi fares and other transport charges to forestall another inflationary spiral

With the recent government approval for another eight cents a gallon increase for diesel, taxi operators, bus companies and other transport firms are pressing for an increase of fares and transport charges.

This will not only add to the very heavy burden of the poor, but will in turn spark off another chain action of price increases. Lim Kit Siang to ask government to change E.P.F. investment policies to directly benefit the workers when Parliament meets from July 17 – 26

When Parliament meets from July 17 – 26, I will ask the Finance Minister, Tun Razak whether the government would consider changing the investment policies with regard to the E.P.F. contributions to directly benefits the workers, for instance, in financing and building low-cost houses for workers, and the delay in raising the interest rates off E.P.F. contributions.

Although the Government has introduces and implemented price control for rice, dividing rice into three broad categories, of Beras Malaysia Pendek, berak Malaysia Sederhana and Beras Malaysia Panjang Super, and many other other smaller divisions, the fact is that Malaysians cannot get ‘low price’ rice anymore although we produce 90% of our own rice needs. On 9th May, 1974, when the Minister of Primary Industries, Datuk Haji Talib Mahmud, called a press conference to announce government approval for oil price increases, he said that the government would only permit the increase of five cents for kerosene, from 71 cents a gallon to 76 cents a gallon. Call on the authorities to revert to the old abattoir system where fresh pork is available in the market, and when there is no unhealthy monopoly by a few in butchering

For the past several weeks, the problem of fresh pork for the consumers, and the new Shah Alam abattoir which gave monopoly to four persons who hold licence to slaughter pigs, have caused unhappiness and frustration to the people in Kuala Lumpur and in Selangor.

Before the authorities implement ay programmes which will affect the customs and life-styles of the Malaysian Chinese, the government should fully consults with the relevant organisations and groups concerned. DAP calls for immediate nation-wide freeze of rents until extension of rent control ordinance as a positive step to help low-income groups fight inflation

The DAP welcomes the statement by the Deputy Prime Minister, Dato Hussein On, that the government is considering the amendment to the Rent Control Ordinance to extend its coverage and curb unreasonable increases in rents.

I suggested in Parliament last year that rent control laws should be extended to cover new areas, including houses built after 1948, to protect the incomes of the lower income groups. I had in the Dewan Rakyat specifically mentioned the Petaling Jaya as a new area which should name under rent control, to prevent unreasonable rent increases from being imposed, adding to the hardship to the poor who are already in financial straits from the effects of galloping inflation.
