Lim Kit Siang calls for the withdrawal of the Fama’s proposed Fish Marketing Scheme

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the 5th DAP Public Rally at Tranquerah (Former Volunteer H.Q.) on Sunday, 20th April 1969 at 9p.m.:

Senator Ghaffar Baba has drawn up a master plan to disrupt the fish trade in West Malaysia, break the rice bowl of fish wholesalers, retailers and the fishermen, and raise the price of fish for the consumers.

This Federal Fish Marketing Scheme will be implemented after the May 10 General Elections, and will cause grave hardship to tens of thousands of fish-sellers, including their families.

Clauses 10 of the FAMA scheme provided that every fish-seller or retailer must possess a licence issued by the Fish Marketing Board, which will cost $10 a year. No one is allowed to sell fish without a license, or he will be fined $500. FAMA authorities said there are 3,685 licensed fish retailers in the country at the moment.

Firstly, what assurance is there at all these 3,695 licensed retailers will be granted licensed by Senator Ghaffar Baba, when they come up for renewal every year? Continue reading Lim Kit Siang calls for the withdrawal of the Fama’s proposed Fish Marketing Scheme

A plea for a government with humanity and understanding of the hardship of the people

A plea for a government with humanity and understanding of the hardship of the people

Yesterday, while on my house-to-house visit in Puchong, 13 m. s., I came across another instance of the cruelty, heartlessness and inhumanity of the Alliance State Government.

At the Puchong 13 m. s., there were about 20 Chinese and Indian families, who face imminent eviction from their land, and demolition of their houses and destruction of their fruit trees by the State Government, because their land had been allocated to Malays.

A visit to these houses will show the poverty, hardship and misery of rural folks in Malaysia, whether Malay, Chinese or Indian. Continue reading A plea for a government with humanity and understanding of the hardship of the people

Another Alliance Govt Low Cost Housing Scheme

The advertisement “Another Alliance Govt. Low Cost Housing Scheme” at the Circular Road low-cost housing scheme is an unashamed attempt by the Alliance Party to make use of government money and resources to advertise itself to win votes at the next elections.

This clearly shows that the government does not know the difference between government and party. It is also for this reason why we have no faith in the impartiality of the government in playing fair in the next general elections.

As in the past, the Alliance Party will make use of public funds, resources and even personnel to help in its party campaign, before and during general elections.

This is in the same class as when government Ministers go around schools before general elections to distribute money to buy votes. Continue reading Another Alliance Govt Low Cost Housing Scheme

Where the DAP differs with the Alliance and the Gerakan: that Malaysia should be a multi-lingual and multi-cultural nation practicing cultural democracy

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the DAP eleventh Merdeka Anniversary Celebrations held at the Sentral DAP Branch premises, 632-A Jalan Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday, August 28 at 7.30 p.m.

While celebrating the 11th Merdeka Anniversary of Malaysia, we must pause and take stock of what progress we have made in our eleven years of independent nationhood.

In my mind, the crucial question to ask is: are we getting a more Malaysian-minded or a more race-motivated nation? Continue reading Where the DAP differs with the Alliance and the Gerakan: that Malaysia should be a multi-lingual and multi-cultural nation practicing cultural democracy

Penang island, Quo Vadis?

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today (21.8.68) issued the following statement:

Penang island is today blanketed by a fog of anxiety, gloom and pessimism, as the islanders see no way out of the economic blind alley they find themselves in, particularly with both the State and Central Governments unsympathetic and unimpressed by the urgency and seriousness of the situation.

Over the years, trade has declined, while unemployment has soared; business has stagnated, while the cost of living has rocketed. Continue reading Penang island, Quo Vadis?

Democracy in Malaysia

In a multi-racial nation like Malaysia, democracy is the only system of government which can unite the various races into one people and forge for them a common purpose and destiny.

Any form of totalitarian or military government, which must necessarily mean the predominance of one racial group over the others, will generate racial tension and conflicts, leading to national disintegration.

However, the democratic spirit and the democratic way of life must be actively and consciously fostered and nurtured if it is not to wither away and die. This is the responsibility of both the government and the governed. Continue reading Democracy in Malaysia
