The basis problems of Chinese Education in Malaysia

For the past several weeks, Chinese school teachers and the Chinese press have been pre-occupied with the Aziz Report and its recommendations.

Much as the Chinese teachers should fight for improved salary scales, and much as the public should support them, the Chinese school teachers should never lose sight of the basic problems and issues of Chinese education in the country. MCE Failures: DAP Calls for more sympathetic approach by Minister of Education

The DAP is shocked at the unsympathetic and inflexible attitude shown by the Minister of Education, Inche Hussein Onn, towards the 7,500 failures in last year’s MCE Examination because of failure in the compulsory Bahasa Malaysia paper.

Inche Hussein Onn has refused to allow those who would have qualified to proceed to Form Six if they had passed the Bahasa Malaysia paper to enter From Six with the proviso that they repeat the MCE Bahasa Malaysia paper at the end of the year.

All that Inche Hussein Onn would undertake is to ‘do his best’ to retain them in Fifth Form classes ‘if enough places were available’. Continue reading DAP Calls for more sympathetic approach by Minister of Education

MCE Results-Ministry of Education must take the blame for the low percentage of passes

MCE Results-Ministry of Education must take the blame for the low percentage of passes

It has been more than a week since the shock MCE results were released-showing a higher percentage of failures in many of the leading schools in the country than previous years.

It is clear tat the main reason for the higher percentage of failures is because of the introduction of the compulsory Bahasa Malaysia paper last year, a failure in which means the failure of the entire examination.

Wherever one goes, throughout the length and breadth of the country, the centre of talk is the MCE examination results because in every town there are large numbers of students who had done well in the examination but still failed the examination because of the compulsory Bahasa Malaysia paper. Many of these students even scored a number of distinctions in other subjects like science, mathematics, hostory, geography, English. MCE Results-low percentage of passes

MCE Results-low percentage of passes

The low percentage of passes in many of the leading schools in the country in the recent MCE examination results is a matter of grave concern to all Malaysians, particularly to parents and students.

The DAP calls on the government to give an explanation and analysis of the reasons for the abnormal fall in the percentage of passes in the MCE examination in Malaysia’s leading schools throughout the country.

The government should release figures as to how many candidates had failed the MCE because of the compulsory Bahasa Malaysia paper.
The position where candidates who had several distinctions in the MCE but not making the grade because of their failure in the compulsory Bahasa Malaysia paper is a very serious one. Continue reading MCE Results-low percentage of passes

Standard of Education

I wish here to refer to a burning question in the schools which is connected with the standard of teaching, which is itself not unrelated to the subject of teachers’ salaries.

This is a problem which has been created by the switch of the media of instruction in all National-type (English) primary schools. All National-type (English) Primary Schools have now switched the media of instruction from English to Bahasa Malaysia for Standard One and
Standard Two classes.

For Standard Four and Five classes, all subjects, apart from science and mathematics, are being taught in Bahasa Malaysia. There will be further conversion of the teaching medium so that by the end of this decade, Bahasa Malaysia will be the sole teaching medium in all govt.-aided primary as well as secondary schools. Government’s aim to eradicate poverty and to strengthen national unity

Speech by Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka (DAP) Mr.Lim Kit Siang, in the Dewan Ra’ayat on the debate on the Royal Address from the Throne on 9.3.1971

Mr.Speaker, Sir, His Majesty, the Yang di-Peruan Agong, in his Royal Address, spoke of the government’s aim to eradicate poverty and to strengthen national unity.

We do not quarrel with these objectives. But there is considerable room for disagreement as to whether government policies and measures are aimed at these objectives, or whether, on the converse, they can only aggravate economic inequality and undermine national solidarity and unity.

Despite the government’s multi-pronged economic policies, the single most important economic and social problem continues to be unemployment, which condemns hundreds of thousands of Malaysians to a sentences of poverty, social humiliation and disgrace. Khir Johari unfit to look after the education of our children

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, to DAP election volunteer workers at DAP Malacca Branch on Thursday, 24th April 1969 at 9.30a.m.:

Call for Inche Khir Johari’s resignation as Education Minister as he has proved to be unfit to look after the education of our children

At DAP public rallies, I had pointed out the injustice of demanding thousands of Chinese school teachers to pass the English-media Senior Cambridge examination within three years or face dismissal. I had pointed out that if Inche Khir Johari were to sit for the Senior Cambridge examination himself, he would be the first to fail.

But I had apparently over-estimated him. Inche Khir Johari confessed in Malacca yesterday, at Dewan Negeri Melaka while giving out $120,000 to 15 schools, that if he were to sit for the L.C.E examination, he would not pass also.

In fact, I have come to wonder whether Inche Khir Johari would pass the Standard V assessment Test if he sits for it!
Inche Khir Johari is the most illiterate Education Minister in the world, and it seems to be his ambition to ensure that the new generation of Malaysians becomes as illiterate as he is. Continue reading Khir Johari unfit to look after the education of our children

Merdeka University Six Questions for Tun Tan Siew Sin

Press Statement by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, on 19th April 1969.

Today, the MCA Elections Committee issued a statement declaring that the MCA and Tun Tan Siew Sin do not oppose the Merdeka University, and that they do not oppose any affect by the people to set up a University.

Then I want Tun Tan Siew Sin to answer the following six question:

1. Why did Tun Tan Siew Sin warn all MCA members and officials last December that they will be expelled from the MCA if they help in the Merdeka University project.
2. Why did Tun Tan Siew Sin refuse to support the registration of the Merdeka University by the government.
3. Why did Tun Tan Siew Sin instruct his Political Secretary, Mr. Bernard Lu, to announce in Sarawak last month that the Alliance government will never permit the registration of the Merdeka University.
4. Why did Tun Tan Siew Sin instruct the Malacca State Authorities to ban hawkers from launching donation sales campaign in aid of Merdeka University?
5. Why did Tun Tan Siew Sin show so much contempt for the efforts of hawkers, fishermen, teachers, workers, hair-dressers, trishaw riders, without his support and other millionaires like him, the Merdeka University will fail in the next 10 years.
6. Why did Tun Tan Siew Sin say a few days ago that establishing the Merdeka University is like expecting ‘an iron tree to produce flowers’ betraying his disapproval and contempt for the project.
