Two questions for Mr Lew Sip Hon

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Malacca, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP public rally Rodgers Street, Kuala Lumpur on 19-4-69:

While posing as the new MCA champion of the Chinese language and Education in Malaysia, the Alliance candidate, Mr. Lew Sip Hon, has studiously evaded foundamental issues and question concerning Chinese Languages and Education.
Mr. Lew had boasted that the Maju Ward had the brain power to match the brains in the DAP, but when he is asked to an open confrontation of ideas, he has always run away – like his mentor Inche Khir Johari. If Mr. Lew Sip Hon continues to run away from foundamental issues he should change the name of the MCA Maju Ward to MCA Malu Ward.

Tonight I want to ask Mr. Lew Sip Hon two questions, one on the Abdul Rahman Talib Education report, and the other on Merdeka University. I hope this time, he does not run away from the issues again.

1. Abdul Rahman Talib Report

I want to know whether Mr. Lew Sip Hon accept and support Mr. Koh Kim Leng’s Abdul Rahman Talib Education report, which is the Alliance Master Plan to destroy Chinese, English and Tamil Education in Malaysia.

Lim Kit Siang wants every MCA Candidate to make his stand on Lew Sip Hon’s Aziz Commission Report

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally in Muar on Friday, 18th April 1969 at 8p.m.

Lim Kit Siang wants every MCA Candidate to make his stand on Lew Sip Hon’s Aziz Commission Report and declare what are the recommendations they consider as unreasonable, and for which they are prepared to resign from MCA if implemented.

MCA Candidates everywhere are saying that if there are recommendations in Lew Sip Hon’s Aziz Commission Report which are unfair and detrimental to Chinese education and teachers, the Alliance government will not implement them. But the voters of Malaysia cannot be so easily fooled and deceived by the MCA candidates.

If the MCA Candidates are sincere in the above statement, then I want every MCA Candidate to let the Malaysian public know what each of them think are the unreasonable provisions in what each of them think are the unreasonable provisions in Lew Sip Hon’s Aziz Commission Report which the Alliance Government will not implement, or if the government implements, for which they are prepared to resign from the MCA in protest. Will the 8,000-odd primary school teachers in English-medium primary schools be dismissed?

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally in Segamat Town on Thursday, 17th April 1969 at 9p.m:

Will the 8,000-odd primary school teachers in English-medium primary schools be dismissed following the implementation of the Abdul Rahman Talib Report to close down all non-Malay schools by 1971?

As provided by the Abdul Rahman Talib Education Report, the Alliance blueprint to close down English, Chinese and Tamil schools, the Alliance has decided to mass convert all English-media primary schools into Malay-medium primary schools by 1971.

The Alliance government has already started this process of forced conversion of English-medium primary schools into Malay schools, although very few parents know about this.

Beginning this year, four subjects in Standard III in English-media primary schools are taught in the Malay language: arts and craft, civics, physical education and singing and music. Continue reading Will the 8,000-odd primary school teachers in English-medium primary schools be dismissed?

The Merdeka University- “to expect iron tree to produce flowers” ?

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka at the fourth Malacca DAP elections rally at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock on 16th April 1969 at 8.30p.m.

Lim Kit Siang challenge Tun Tan Siew Sin to put it to a best whether Merdeka University is trying to get iron trees to produce flowers, or it is a case where with the united will of the people, even water can be squeezed out of stones, by registering the Merdeka University.

Tun Tan Siew Sin and the MCA’s opposition to the Merdeka University is best summed up by Tun Tan Siew Sin’s latest wrote on the subject, when he said:

“ The Merdeka University is a useless dream, and to expect the Merdeka University to succeed in the present circumstances of the nation is tantamount to expecting a iron tree to produce flowers.”

It has become clear that Tun Tan Siew Sin has been selected by the UMNO racialists to be the destroyer of the Merdeka University. Continue reading The Merdeka University- “to expect iron tree to produce flowers” ?

People of Malacca to organise their own campaign to donate to Merdeka University

Statement by DAP Organising Secretary and Parliamentary Candidate for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a Press Conference at 5, Joner Street, on 9th April 1969 at 10.30a.m.

The President of the MCA, Tun Tan Siew Sin, has criticized the DAP for launching its nation-wide campaign to sell 50,000 copies of the Rocket in aid of the Merdeka University.

Tun Tan also accused the DAP of trying to make the Merdeka University into a ‘political football’ and trying to use it to get votes.

First of all, let me say that if Tun Tan Cheng Lock is still alive today, and still the President of MCA, he would never make such an accusation. Tun Tan Cheng Lock would have been the first to publicly commend the DAP for joining the national support for the Merdeka University. Tun Tan Cheng Lock would have also committed the full support of himself and the MCA to the Merdeka University, just as he had done so 15 years ago when he championed the formation of the Nanyang University.

The DAP need not apologise for our support for the Merdeka University, just as we have no need to apologise for standing for justice and racial equality, for fighting corruption, incompetence and discrimination. But it is Tun Tan Siew Sin and the Mca who must explain their opposition to the Merdeka University, and their determination to destroy it. This is why up to now, the application for registration of the Merdeka University had not been approved yet, although the Tunku Abdul Rahman College, conceived by the MCA to counter the Merdeka University, had already been allowed to start classes. The fate of 25,329 teachers

The DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today issued the following statement (29.3.1969):

The Aziz Commission Report has brought fear, uncertainty and insecurity to 25,329 teachers who have been described as unqualified and underqualified teachers and who are recommended to pass the S.C. or M.C.E. examination within three years or face dismissal.

This recommendation, if adopted and implemented, will be a great and cruel blow on Chinese school teachers.

Their ability of Chinese – school teachers to teach has nothing to do with their passing S.C. or M.C.E. examination before they could continue teaching, as it is to demand that English school teachers must pass the Chinese Senior Middle Three examination before they could be confirmed in their teaching posts.

It is an unreasonable to expect Chinese school teachers to pass the S.C or M.C.E. examination before they could continue teaching, as it is to demand that English school teachers must pass the Chinese Middle Three examination before they could be confirmed in their teaching posts. Dear Sir,

I refer to your report today on my speech at a Penang DAP public rally deploring the Alliance government’s move to convert the present English-medium schools into Malay-medium schools.

Next year, Standard Four students will be taught history and geography in the National Language, and in 1971, Standard Five students will learn the science an mathematics subjects in the National Language. Continue reading Conversion of English-medium schools

Mr. Chua Song Lim asked to give three reasons to justify his stand that Nanyang University of low academic standard

Speech by DAP Organising Secretary, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at a DAP Public Rally at Kulai, Johore, on Friday, January 31, 1969 at 8p.m.

On the 18th January, the MCA National Vice President, Mr. Chua Song Lim, gave a policy speech in Muar on the MCA’s stand on the recognition of Nanyang and Formosan university degrees and qualifications.

Mr. Chua said the Alliance government was right in refusing to recognize Nanyang University degrees because of its low academic standard.

How does Mr. Chua know? Did he speak with knowledge, or was it merely from hearsay? Has he made a study and comparison of the standard of the Nanyang University with other universities, for instance, the University of Malaya or the University of Singapore?

Is Mr. Chua qualified and competent to make any such study and comparison? We know Mr. Chua is a very successful and prosperous rubber baron, who knows when to strike a business deal to pile up a fortune, and who grows richer and richer year by year. But that does not make him an authority qualified to condemn the Nanyang University as of low academic standard! Siew Sin’s directive to all MCA members to resign from all Merdeka University preparatory bodies

The DAP organising Secretary and candidate for Serdang, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today issued the following statement (16.12.68):

The MCA President, Tun Tan Siew Sin, has issued a directive to all MCA members to resign from all protem organisations of the Merdeka University project, or face party discipline.

It is clear that Tun Tan Siew Sin and the MCA, who claim themselves to be the sole champions of Chinese language and education, have received an order from the UMNO not only to oppose the Merdeka University project, but to wreck and destroy it.

The Alliance are worried at the wide support the Merdeka University project is receiving among the people. They have therefore decided to do everything they can to prevent the Merdeka University from succeeding.

Tun Tan has ordered MCA members to resign from all Merdeka University preparatory bodies or face party discipline. Continue reading Siew Sin’s directive to all MCA members to resign from all Merdeka University preparatory bodies

Chinese education

Speech by DAP Candidate for the Serdang State By-election, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, who is also DAP Organising Secretary, when addressing election workers at the Sungai Besi DAP Branch on Tuesday, December 3, 1968 at 8.30p.m.

Last week, the Vice Chairman of the United Chinese School Teachers’ Association, Mr. Loot Ting Yu, said that communist activity in Chinese schools could be eliminated if the ‘outstanding grievances of the Chinese educated community can be solved.’

This is an observation which is shared by all those who understand the problems and grievances of the Chinese educated community.

Over the years, the Chinese-educated provided recruits for extreme politics, not because Chinese education made them extremists, but because of the resentments and frustrations felt by the Chinese-educated. Continue reading Chinese education
