Election Commission cannot supply Opposition parties with the new 1989 Electoral Roll until well past the snap 27-day voters’ registration exercise

The DAP had wanted to buy the new 1989 Electoral Roll to help the people to check whether their names are still on the Electoral Roll, or had disappeared and need to re-register, but we have been told by the Election Commission that they cannot sell and supply us with the new 1989 Electoral Roll until well after the end of the 27-day snap voters’ registration exercise on 27th March 1990. The Election Commission has been caught red-handed as breaching the Constitutional provisions stipulating that it should enjoy public confidence by being independent of all political parties, including the ruling government of the day, in carrying out its constitutional duties to be responsible for all aspects in the conduct of elections. It is most significant that the Election Commission has been silent in a thousand tongues in not openly denying my statement that it has instructed State Election officials to get ready for a snap 21-day voters’ registration exercise beginning on March 1 primarily to register the 300,000 to 500,000 UMNO Baru members who are not on the Electoral Roll, although the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, has made his routine denial that the Government or UMNO Baru could direct the Election Commission to do its bidding.
