Present may be the ‘calm before the storm’ and the DAP cannot exclude the possibility of general elections being held after Hari Raya Puasa at end of June or early July.

In the last month, there is increasing speculation that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, will be going for the full term into next year. Such speculation had seemingly been reinforced by two recent events: winning a comfortable two-third majority and the appointment of Ghaffar Baba as Deputy Prime Minister. The Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, said in Kepong UMNO Delegates meeting yesterday that the Barisan Nasional needed a strong majority in order to serve the people. DAP announces official general elections campaign theme as ‘Deny Barisan Nasional Two-Thirds Majority’
In the final days of the Dewan Rakyat two weeks ago, there was a rumour that over a hundred Barisan Nasional Assemblymen were going to resign en bloc to force the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, to hold general elections.

I did not give credence to such a rumour, for such an event was unthinkable, although it reflected the strain on Barisan Nasional component parties caused by the uncertainty and suspension as to when the general elections would be held.
