I have just returned from Sarawak where the recently concluded Sarawak and Sabah general elections have elected DAP MPs for Kuching, Sibu and Sandakan, bringing the total Parliamentary strength to nine. This was also the DAP’s parliamentary result in the 1974 general elections, when the late Tun Razak capitalized on a pro-government swing and used the Mao Tse Tung strategy to try to crush the Opposition, in particular the DAP. The next general elections is now very near at hand, and I expect it to be held on 24th April 1982, or a week before or after, The DAP will be contesting in Sarawak Parliamentary elections for the first time, and I hope that the people of Sarawak will give the DAP their support to strengthen the Opposition to provide for an effective check against the rising tide of extremism in the 1980s, abuses of power and the continued social and economic injustices and inequalities in the country.
