The issues of the next general elections

In the 1969 general elections, the percentage of votes polled by the Alliance feel by 14% from a respectable majority of 58.5% in 1964 to a minority vote of 44.9%.

DAP branches must be prepared for general elections to be held within the next six months

The publication by the Elections Commission of its recommendations for new Parliamentary and State constituencies is the latest indication of general elections around the corner, despite the statement by the Elections Commission Chairman that Parliament can continue till February 1976. DAP calls on Tun Razak to dissolve Parliament and hold fresh general elections on the expiry of the five-year mandate in May 1974

Speech by DAP Secretary-General and Member of Parliament for Bandar Melaka, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, at the Perak DAP State Convention held at Jubilee Park Hall, Jalan Brewster, Ipoh, on Sunday, 10th February, 1974 at 10.00 a.m.

1. DAP calls on Tun Razak to dissolve Parliament and hold fresh general elections on the expiry of the five-year mandate in May 1974.

The present government was elected on May 10, 1969 with a mandate to rule the country for a period of five years.

This mandate will expire in three months’ time. The DAP calls on Tun Razak ,to dissolve Parliament and hold fresh general elections so that the Alliance government would not exceed the five-year mandate it has received from the people.

Is your name still on the electoral register?

The Leader of Parliamentary Opposition and Secretary-General of DAP Mr. Lim Kit Siang, today made the following statement (18.2.73):

Call on Malaysian voters to check at the nearest election office that their names are still on the electoral register

At previous general elections and by-elections, large numbers of voters who had voted before found that their names had been removed from the electoral rolls, losing the right to vote.

Voters must not allow this to happen to them again. At present, the electoral registers are open for inspection until March 14, and all voters should go to the nearest election office or other designated inspection centre to check that their names have not been put down for de-registration.

I have found that during the recent electoral register revision exercise conducted last September, it is proposed to cancel out 9,000 voters from my Bandar Melaka parliamentary constituency alone, which is 20 percent of the entire electorate. I rise to refer to the $911,124 which is sought for the Election Commission to cover its expenses for this year. Out of this sum, the bulk of it, viz. $863,824, was to cover the cost of registration of electors and the revision of electoral rolls in Malaysia. I had said that I would not rule out the possibility of general elections being called within the next 12 months, although the Alliance government could delay until February 1976. DAP Member of Parliament, Mr. Lim Kit Siang, will ask in Parliament next week whether the Government would nationalise foreign companies and industries under the Second Malaysia Plan to give bumiputras greater share of the commercial and industrial activities in the country.
